After graduating from Jonesboro High School John moved to Odessa Texas and started working for Southwestern Bell Telephone Company. He was drafted into the Marines In 1952.
John met the love of his life Shirley Ann Self in Odessa Texas and made her his bride on June 30th, 1953. Four days later they moved to California for his stint in the Marines.
After the Marines they moved back to Odessa where he was a member of the Masonic Lodge #955 of Odessa and he continued his career with SWBT. John’s career with Southwestern Bell Telephone spanned 44 years and earned him the nickname Big John. With SWBT the family moved from Odessa to Lubbock, where he graduated from Texas Tech to Dallas to Little Rock Arkansas to Houston to Austin and finally retirement. In Austin, John and Shirley could enjoy their season tickets for the Texas Longhorns football and both Women and Men basketball teams.
A lifelong hunter, John enjoyed many hunting trips with his sons, sons in law, grandsons and friends. One highlight was in 1986 John riding horseback in the Texas Sesquicentennial Trail Ride with sons Rocky. Lance son in law Derrick and good friend Johnny Ragsdale.
John is survived by his wife Shirley, Daughters Linda Norwood (Derrick), Renee Robuck (Brent Fuller) sons Rocky Robuck (Ariana) and Lance Robuck (Diana). John and Shirley were blessed with 12 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandson.
A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, September 23rd, 2023 at their home at 9610 FM 1826 Austin Texas 78737 from 1:00 PM - 4:00 PM. Please join us for a margarita and share a memory of John.
