Dr. John Tinsley Oden, an esteemed figure in the world of Engineering Sciences, passed away peacefully on August 27th at St. David’s hospital after a long and valiant battle with cancer that he fought bravely until the end. Born on Christmas Day in 1936, his legacy is marked by his dedication to education and a remarkable work ethic. Throughout his 86 years, Dr. Oden authored over 600 scientific publications and 50 books, leaving an indelible impact on his field. His commitment to the University of Texas spanned more than half a century, where he taught mathematics, scientific computing, and engineering. His contributions also led to the establishment of the Texas Institute for Computational Engineering and Science (TICAM), which is now the Oden Institute that bears his name. Dr. Oden's legacy transcends his professional achievements; he was a loving husband to his wife Barbara, who supported his pursuits for over 57 years, a proud father to his children Walker and Lee, her husband Nick, and a very proud grandfather to his only grandchild and namesake Tanner Oden. He is also survived by his brother, James Henry Oden of Alexandria, VA. He was a mentor to so many, who shared his passion for hunting, wildlife conservation, writing, poetry, and art with his friends and family. His memory will continue to inspire and resonate in the hearts of all who knew him.
