John August Namken

John was raised in a family of 4 brothers and 3 sisters. He joined the army in 1943 where he served part of his military career in Alaska building highways for the government. He left the military in 1946. A few years later (1950) he married Berndine Edith Findeisen and moved to Houston. He became employed by Brown & Root as a construction contractor and worked for them until his retirement. There he and his wife raised 3 children, Sharon, Glenna and John.

John, or Johnny to his friends, devoted his life to his church, God and his family. He spent much of his spare time helping at the church or assisting other family members or friends with helping to fix whatever needed fixing. He loved working with his hands and making things work. He acted as a Trustee at the church for many years and was proud of this duty. He also loved to read western and murder mystery books and watch old western movies. He had a green thumb and could make his garden grow beautifully.

John is survived by 3 brothers and two sisters. Preceding him in death were his parents, one brother, Leroy, one sister, Ruby, and his beloved wife. He is also survived by his 3 children, Sharon Gunter and husband John, Glenna Mikulin and husband William, and John M. Namken and wife Erika. He also leaves behind 3 grandchildren - Jaime Mikulin, John F. Gunter, and Lindsay Gunter; 2 great grandchildren - Coleman Gunter and Paisley Gunter; 3 step grandchildren and 6 step great grandchildren.

Services will be held at 1:00 pm., Saturday, February 26th at Bethany Lutheran Church, 522 Lindale, Houston, TX. There will be a visitation period from 12:00-1:00 before the service. Interment will be at Earthman Resthaven Cemetery located at 13102 N. Freeway in Houston. Refreshments will follow at the home of Glenna Mikulin.
