He grew up in North Dakota and graduated from St. James High School in 1957. John graduated from the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks in 1966 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering. He subsequently earned a Master of Science degree in Mathematics in 1971 and a Master of a Business Administration degree in 1977—both from Fairleigh Dickinson University in Rutherford, NJ. In 1983 he earned a Master of Engineering degree from Virginia Tech.
John lived for many years in Randolph, NJ. He worked on various Army and Navy defense contracts, including the anti-ballistic missile system at AT&T Bell Labs in Whippany. He retired from Bell Labs at the end of 1989 as a member of the Technical Staff after 25 years of employment. John continued working as a consultant for several more years. In 1997, John and his family moved to Austin, TX where he worked with DCS/Alcatel. He fully retired in October 1998.
John served honorably and proudly in the US Air Force from 1959 through 1963. He was awarded the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal for service in Southeast Asia.
John was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #8787 in Austin, TX. He was a member of the American Legion Post #299 in Manvel, ND.
John was a member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks for more than 30 years. He served as Exalted Ruler for Elks Lodge #782 in Dover, NJ. He also served in many officer positions at Elks Lodge #201 in Austin, TX.
John and his wife loved to travel. They were lucky enough to visit most of Europe, Central America and South America.
John considered himself a connoisseur of good beer—his favorites being German and Belgian beers. For many years, one of his hobbies was to home brew these sorts of beers.
John was preceded in death by his sister, Jane. John is survived by Cathy, his wife of 47 years; their children, daughters Caroline Moran (wife of Jeff Chaplin) and Kirsten Ebersole (wife of John Wright) and son Kevin Moran; grandchildren Joseph Ebersole, Cecelia Ebersole and Kalle Chaplin. Surviving brothers include Robert Moran of California and Lee Moran of North Dakota.
Services will be held at Cook-Walden Chapel of the Hills Funeral Home on Friday, May 27, 2016 at 10 A.M. A reception will immediately follow. Cemetery Services will be at Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Killeen on Friday, May 27 at 2 P.M.
