John (Spanky) Owen Monaghan Jr., 61, of Austin, Texas, passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 24, 2008. He was born in Austin, Texas on November 9, 1946. He served as a Military Police Officer in the Army National Guard of Texas and was Honorably Discharged on January 1, 1971. John was commissioned with the Austin Police Department on September 4, 1970 and proudly served for 31 years. He retired on April 21, 2001 having reached the rank of Sergeant. He will always be remembered for the caring, compassionate father, brother, uncle and friend that he was. He had such a zest for life and was such an inspiration to his many friends and family. John had a deep devotion and enduring love for his precious daughter, Nicole. John's passions included riding through the hill country on his Harley with countless, wonderful friends and listening to music from the 60's. He will be missed dearly by many, but he will remain close to our hearts forever. John was preceded in death by his father, John Monaghan Sr., his mother, Rebecca Mae Monaghan, and his sister, Rheta Meek. He is survived by his loving daughter, Nicole; his brother Jim Monaghan and wife Elaine; his sister Velma Downs and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and many lifelong friends. Visitation will be from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m., Sunday, July 27, 2008 at the Wilke-Clay-Fish Funeral Home, 2620 South Congress, Austin, Texas. Funeral Services will be at 10:00 a.m., Monday, July 28, 2008 at the Wilke-Clay-Fish Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Live Oak Cemetery, Manchaca, Texas. Honoring John as pallbearers will be Gene Allen, David Bell, Rick Holman, Carroll Perkins, Ray Trissel, Kevin Kirkpatrick, Bob Sheehan, Dell Shaw and Roger Floyd. Honorary pallbearers will be Luther New, Bobby Joe New and Jim Pallas.
