John was born on November 7, 1950 to Marjorie and Walter Jenkins. He was born in Wichita Falls, Texas, but moved to Washington D.C. shortly after for his father's job. He eventually found his way back to Texas with the rest of his family and built a wonderful life there. John was an avid bowler and knew more about sports than anyone else. He carried that knowledge with him for many years and it eventually led to weekly football bets on each game during the seasons. He had a running bet with his wife, brother, daughter, and granddaughter and called them every Sunday at 10 am for their picks. It became a source of fun, teasing, and banter for everyone involved. John loved his sports and will be greatly remembered for his love of the Washington Redskins, Texas Longhorns, and Texas Rangers.
John was an extremely hard-working individual and took each job very seriously. This included the first job of delivering newspapers with his twin brother, Joe, all the way to the latest job where he had worked for the last 20 years. He was always devoted to each job and made sure to perform it to the best of his ability. John also knew how to play, though. He was an extremely fun-loving man with a wonderful and loving personality and always liked to make people laugh. He brought a great deal of joy to everyone's path he crossed. His jubilant personality was passed on to more than just people. His cats, Callie and Spook, became two of his favorite things and he looked forward to “treat time” and spoiling them rotten.
Family was also very important to John. He was a very devoted husband, father, grandfather, and brother. He had just recently returned from a wonderful family reunion in Idaho where he spent time with family that he did not get to see very often. They shared many amazing memories and created even more special ones while there. The Jenkins family is a very close one and will miss John dearly.
John was preceded in death by his mother and father, Marjorie and Walter Jenkins, and his twin brother, Joseph Jenkins. He is survived by his wife, Darlene Jenkins, daughter, Tiffany Jenkins, granddaughter, Amber McGee, stepdaughter, Julie Nelson, and stepsons, Phil and Guy Mason. John also leaves behind his brothers, Walter and Lyndon Jenkins, and sisters, Anne Mauel and Beth Bromberg, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Visitation will be Saturday, August 15th, 2015 at 6:00 pm. A remembrance of John's life will be held on Sunday, August 16th, 2015 at 10 am at Cook Walden on North Lamar with graveside services following at Cook-Walden Capital Park Cemetery. Family and friends are invited back to Cook Walden after graveside services for a barbecue lunch, John's favorite.
Pallbearers will be Billy McGee, Wes Winters, George Greer, Ryan Mauel, Zach Mauel, and Jeff Crumpley.
