John Sheppard Ikard, 89, of Houston, Texas, passed away on March 24, 2025, after a brief physical decline. He was born on September 29, 1935, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, to James Lanson Ikard and Ruby Lee Bowers, who preceded him in death. John is survived by his loving wife, Patricia Ann Johnstone Ikard; his daughters Stacy Lynn Ikard (Al Krummenacher) and Kellie Ikard Davidson (Ray); his five grandchildren – Joshua Ikard Krummenacher (Alison), Andrew Ikard Krummenacher (Erin), Rachel Ikard Mariscal (Jay), Rebecca Ann DeWhitt, and Sarah Elizabeth DeWhitt; and three great-grandchildren – Emma Krummenacher and Luke Krummenacher, and Gabriel Mariscal.
While still in college, John met and married the love of his life, Patricia Ann Johnstone, of Houston, Texas. They were married on April 5, 1958 and were married for 67 years and raised two wonderful daughters, Stacy and Kellie. John graduated from Texas Tech University in 1961 with a degree in Engineering. Pat and John settled in Houston Texas, where he became President of Sentinel American Life Insurance Company. Along with Pat, John created a home full of laughter, family and friends. John was a longtime member of the Hey Lollies Square Dance Club, Memorial Drive Presbyterian Church, and The Texas Legal Reserve Officers Association where he served as their President for a time. John was also a tribal member of The Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma.
John will be deeply missed. He was a faithful husband, benevolent father, and loving patriarch. For the final four decades of his life John prioritized his grandchildren. He generously spent his time and resources being a present and supportive “Grandy.” He was a friend to those blessed to be in his presence and he never lost his sense of charm and or his gentlemanly ways. John was successful in his occupation, and an example of integrity, hard work and dedication for us all. John taught us many things, but most importantly was how to think about and approach people. His favorite phrase was “they are good people,” and he would apply that phrase to almost everyone and every group of people he came in contact with, which we found endearing and humorous. Now that he is gone, we will cherish this phrase as a legacy for us all.
Services for John Ikard will be held on Friday, May 9, 2025, at 11:00 am at Memorial Drive Presbyterian Church, 11612 Memorial Dr, Houston, TX 77024. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in his honor to the charity of your choice.
