John Burnett Fitzpatrick of Austin passed away peacefully on January 8, 2025, at the age of 83 after a long illness. He was born July 23, 1941, to Phillip Henry Fitzpatrick and Anna Jean Burnett in Waldron, Arkansas. When John was eight years old the family moved to Marshall, Texas where he lived his formative years. He enjoyed time with family and friends and took every opportunity to go hunting in the Pineywoods of East Texas or fishing at Caddo Lake. He graduated from Marshall High School in 1959 where he played the trumpet in the marching band. In scouting he achieved the Life Scout rank.
John attended the University of Texas at Austin where he majored in Architecture and played the trumpet in the Longhorn Marching Band. His devotion for the Horns was lifelong. He also worked as a Wedding and Event Photographer during college.
John began his architecture apprenticeship with the late William Scudder. After receiving his architectural license, he began his own architecture firm in 1970 to design high end custom homes throughout Austin and Westlake which he continued until his final hours in 2025. He was a long-time member of AIA Austin and Home Builders Association of Greater Austin. He won numerous awards throughout his career including being selected for three AIA Austin Home Tours and being able to participate in twelve Austin Parade of Homes.
John enjoyed world travel and had fond memories of his many trips with his former wife, friend and the mother of his two children, Velma. He also enjoyed ballroom dancing and spending time with family and attending all the grandchildren’s special events throughout the years. He was a member of Hill Country Bible Church in Austin Texas.
John is survived by his two children Farah Fitzpatrick Welch and John David Fitzpatrick and wife Dr. Nicole; four grandchildren James Phillip Welch, Anna Elizabeth Welch, Hudson Luke Fitzpatrick and Caden John Fitzpatrick; brother Phillip David Fitzpatrick and wife Edna of Waco. He is also survived by his niece and nephews and other extended family members.
John’s Celebration of Life service will be held on January 24, 2025, at 2pm at Weed Corley Fish Funeral Home on Parkcrest Drive in Austin with visitation before or after.
