A Veteran of World War II, he was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army at the end of the war. He became a Linotype operator/printer under the tutorage of his father, Ed Cox at The Bellevue News in Bellevue, Texas after having graduated from Bellevue High School. Having mastered the craft he went to work for the Wichita Falls Times and Record News and after several years went to work for the Temple Daily Telegram. Several years later he retired from the Austin American Statesman.
John was a master fisherman, and he loved to hunt wild game. He always prepared and ate what he harvested. Being around him one could tell he worshipped his Lord and Savior. He remembered well his experiences in life and could make them into interesting stories.
John was preceded in death by his first wife and the mother of his children, Missye Rosalind Marshall Cox in November, 1976. He later married church and family friend, Gladys Irene Whited in 1977 in Austin, Gladys preceded him in death on October 11, 2006. A few years later he married Barbara Ivy of Austin who is ill in a Dallas area nursing home.
Preceding him was an infant son, John Marshall Cox in 1938 and his parents, Ed and Myrtle Sensibaugh Cox.
John is survived by his children, Mrs. Rebecca Hobday and husband Jack of Temple, TX, Mrs. Medra Stewart and husband Buddy of Holland, TX, Mrs. Carrollin Cossar and husband Alan of Georgetown, TX, John Marshall of Georgetown, TX and Mrs. Michi Ingram and husband Donny of Lorena, TX; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; brother, James and wife Jo Ann Cox of McGregor.
Graveside services will be held at 2:00 pm on Tuesday, September 15, 2015 at Capital Park Cemetery, 14501 North IH-35, Pflugerville, Texas.
