Joe Earl Phillips, age 50, passed away peacefully at home due to complications from colon cancer. He was the beloved son of Erma Lee Phillips and Joe J. Phillips who preceded him in death. Survivors include his wife of 26 years, Lynette (Saterfield) Phillips; sons, Sterling Jamal and Spencer Tremaine; sister, Faye Phillips-Brown; brother, Pat Phillips; and many nieces and nephews. He was born in Refugio, Texas, educated in Corpus Christi, and graduated from F. H. Moody High School in 1978. While at Moody High, he excelled as a basketball player and was named to the All-District and All South Texas Teams. He received his BBA degree from Southwestern University in 1982. Joe worked at Hospira, Inc. (formerly Abbott Laboratories) for 27 years. He took pride in always doing his best job for the company. He began work as Quality Assurance Inspector and was eventually promoted to several other positions including Safety Technician and Production Supervisor. He most recently worked as a Senior HR Representative which was the perfect position for him to help employees which he so enjoyed. His smile will be missed. Family was always his priority and love. His devotion to his family knew no bounds. He was also devoted to youth basketball and proudly served as President of Texas Thunder Basketball Club. Joe was a positive influence in the lives of many young men who played Thunder basketball. He worked tirelessly to meet the goals of the Texas Thunder organization which is to reinforce positive values through the benefits of youth participation in basketball. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Joe’s name to the East 19th Street Missionary Baptist Church Building Fund, 3401 Rogge Lane, Austin, Texas 78723. The family invites friends to a visitation from 6:00PM – 8:00PM on Tuesday, August 17, 2010 at Cook-Walden Funeral Home, 6100 N. Lamar Blvd. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00AM on Wednesday, August 18, 2010 at East 19th Street Missionary Baptist Church, 3401 Rogge Lane, Austin, Texas 78723.
