Joan Lentz Shipnes passed away on March 31, 2018 in Austin, Texas. She was born in Lockhart, Texas on October 6, 1938 to parents Zac Lentz and Evelyn Moore Lentz. She was raised in Victoria, Texas until moving to Austin to attend the University of Texas. While at UT, she pledged Zeta Tau Alpha and made many lifelong friends. When Joan graduated, she moved to Houston, Texas to teach second graders in the Spring Branch school district. In Houston, she met the love of her life, Stuart Shipnes. Joan and Stuart married on June 29, 1963. After they started a family they moved to Victoria to raise their children. Joan enjoyed being active by playing tennis, walking, and gardening. She also gave her time to many volunteer organizations, including the Junior Leagues of Victoria and Austin, the Court of Six Flags in Victoria, and the Victoria Friends of the Library. Joan and Stuart retired to Austin in 2002 to be near their daughter and grandchildren.
Joan is survived by her husband of 54 years, Stuart Shipnes, as well as her son, Jeffrey Shipnes, daughter, Julie Shipnes Allen, and son-in-law Michael Allen. She is also survived by two grandchildren, Kara Michelle Allen and Collin Scott Allen. Joan was a loving wife, friend, mother, and grandmother. We will miss her enthusiasm for life and her beautiful loving smile.
A memorial reception will be held Saturday, April 7th from 1:00 to 3:00 pm at the Austin Country Club, 4408 Long Champ Drive, Austin, Texas. All are welcome. Ashes will be interred in Austin at Remembrance Gardens at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center.
