Joan Griese Davis, 66, passed away on Sunday, April 13, 2014 in Austin. She was born on April 19, 1947 in Russell, Kansas to Fredrick L. Griese and Tekla Mermis Griese. She was a loving wife and a dedicated educator.
Teaching was Joan's life passion. She served in many different facilities including Marachek Middle School in Aurora, Colorado, Porter Jr. High, Region 13 Educational Service Center, with 17 years as Department Chair, Reading, at Austin Community College, with her best friend Dorothy Martinez.
Joan was awarded and recognized with several local, state, and national awards for teaching excellence that she hardly even mentioned to anyone. What really mattered to her was that she was able to help her students. When her niece asked Joan what she did for a living, Joan said, "I teach people to read who otherwise could not have gone to college". That is what was important to her.
She helped literally thousands of children & adults learn to read. Many started their first classes with her with some hostility towards the public educational system that had failed them earlier in life. But all of her students learned that Joan sincerely cared about them and helped them overcome their difficulties. They almost all adored Joan by the time her classes ended and they realized how much they had gained from her teaching. This often difficult task was so rewarding for Joan, she loved her job and was truly saddened when her health problems forced her to retire early.
Joan was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Darrell Griese; and aunt and uncle, Florence and Leo Mermis; she will be sadly missed by her beloved husband of 36 years, Ron L. Davis; sister, June Robben and husband Rodger; nieces, Stephanie Robben-Cannon, Monica Stage, and Laurie Griese-Long; nephews, Michael Robben and Martin Leo Griese; numerous other relatives; and a host of friends.
A Celebration of Joan's Life Service will be at 3:30 P.M., Wednesday, April 30, 2014 in the Chapel of Cook-Walden/Forest Oaks Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made out to any of the reading organizations listed here. http://www.acacamps.org/explore30/reading-organizations.
