Jerry Russell Weathers was born in Austin, TX, on August 19th, 1952. After a long battle with Parkinson’s disease, he went to be with his Lord and Savior on March 15th, 2024, while surrounded by family.
Jerry was the fourth child of Travis and Frances Weathers, with older siblings Judy, Jan, and Jim. In his youth he attended Brentwood Oaks Church of Christ with his family. Jerry graduated from McCallum High School in 1970.
He went off to Abilene to attend Abilene Christian College. During summer break after his sophomore year, Jerry was playing softball for the Brentwood Oaks Church team. He first met Teri, his future bride, at a softball tournament in Ft. Worth. Teri was there supporting her own church, Austin’s First Evangelical Free Church, and cheering for her cousin playing for First Free. Brentwood won the state tournament, and Jerry was named all-state shortstop, but the biggest prize he won that tournament was getting a first date with Teri. It was a whirlwind romance, with them meeting in August and getting married in December of 1972.
Jerry graduated from ACU in 1975, He earned his Professional Engineering License in 1982 while working at the family business, Trinity Engineering Testing Corporation (TETCO). He was named President of TETCO in 1988 where he diligently led the company until his retirement in 2014. He actively participated in various professional organizations, especially the Texas Society for Professional Engineers and the American Council for Independent Laboratories. He served in leadership roles and earned awards with both of those organizations.
Jerry and Teri have attended Westover Hills Church of Christ since returning to Austin in 1977. That same year they welcomed their first child, Tracy. Tammy and Jerrod followed in 1980 and 1984, completing their family. Jerry enjoyed serving his church in so many ways, volunteering as a deacon, serving with the finance committee, and working with the youth group. He was very honored to be chosen as an elder at Westover, a role he filled for 12 years. He loved working alongside his fellow elders and cherished the opportunities to shepherd and encourage anyone he could.
Jerry loved playing sports and being active. His favorite hobbies in more recent years were spending time at the ranch in San Saba with his cows and being with his grandkids who he loved dearly. To the seven grandkids, he is fondly known as Pops.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother-in-law J.B. Hamilton.
Jerry is survived by his wife of 51 years, Teri, daughter Tracy Tracy and husband Kevin, daughter Tammy Hunt and husband Todd, son Jerrod Weathers and wife Jamie, and grandchildren Joseph Saccone, Isabelle and Mason Hunt, Addelyn and Hannah Tracy, Everett and Perry Weathers.
