Jerry Russell Patterson was beautiful  baby boy. 

Right from the start –you could tell he was a special child. Kind of a chosen one –if you will, to the family. He was cute and rowdy and fun to have around. ML and Arlene were tickled to have a grandson that was the apple of their eye and special in every way. Everyone played with Jerry. 

Four  years  later I had another baby boy. Billy Jr –known by family as Bubba. 
Then a few months later Jerry had a brother named Kevin.. These boys were great friends and had allot of fun together. Since we lived close together they were more like Brothers than cousins. 

It took our  village to raise the children.  We were all together  allot of the time. After all we were proudly the Patterson family and we were invincible. 
One day-Not sure how old they were –Maybe Jerry was 6 or 7 –Kevin was the same age as Bubba so they were 4 yrs younger. –Jerry and Kevin came to my house to “play” Jerry  announced proudly,” Aunt Marcy –We have chicken pox.”  I was mortified. I had an only child and I knew nothing about chicken pox. But Jerry and Kevin had them so they decided to share in their wealth. Lol, What could you say? They had already been there a few minutes. Yes, Bubba got them too.

As they got older –Jerry came to my house several times to play with Bubba-sometime alone. Once when my Bubba was about 2 ½ or 3 –Jerry came and asked me if he could play with Bubba. They went outside and Jerry came into tell me come see what Bubba is doing. I said what –as we went to the door? Jerry said,” Bubba is riding my bike.” I told him, Jerry he cant ride that bike –he is too little. But sure enough when I got to the door there was Bubba riding around in circles in our drive way. He was sure enough riding the bike. Had to fall off to get off but Jerry was there to catch him. Jerry was careful with him and if he got hurt he was the one who always came to tell me. 
Jerry you made such a big difference in so many lives and everyone who knows you will always be better for knowing you. Always in my heart honey and never forgotten. Tell uncle Bill I love him and I hope to see him someday.

Many of you today knew Jerry as a father, friend, and business owner. Jerry was an easy man to be with. He was likable, personable, and rarely ever met a stranger. Also like his grandfather and the Patterson he was, he was someone you could count on. Regardless of the time of day, if you needed him, he would be there. Although, sometimes with a little procrastination. These are things you know and I'm sure each of you has a story about Jerry's easy going manner. I hope you'll share these later today.

Our hearts go out to Amanda who has lost not only her husband but her friend. It saddens me that Jena and Jaydon will not know their father as a man who enjoyed life to the fullest. It is a joy for life, this gusto, which as Jerry's uncle that I want to share with you today. Being a little over 7 years apart it is easy to recall his early years since we grew up together.

As a child, Jerry was a force of energy to be reckoned with on one hand and a sprit that instantly brought a smile to your face on the other hand. One of my earliest memories of Jerry is about age 3. It's the Big Wheel story and I'm sure everyone in the family can recall this story. As you know a Big Wheel is one of those large  plastic trikes designed to be ridden about 2/3 mph. Jerry thought it was appropriate to take it to one of the biggest and steepest hills he could find, which happened to be Billy's, his oldest uncle's driveway, just across the road from house he grew up in. He proceeded to ride it down the hill, going about 30 mph! We all watched and laughed as he blazed on down the hill, where he crashed and burned. He got right up, proud and laughing. He had absolutely no fear when it came to life.

It was the gusto that actually sparked his nickname. You may be wondering how Jerry came to be known as JB, after all his middle name is Russell. A few years after the big wheel incident, we were watching a movie called Ransom of Red Chief, (the O'Henry short story). The story is about two schemers that came up with a plan to kidnap a child from a wealthy family and hold him for ransom. For those of you who don't know this story, the child turned out to be more than than the two kidnappers could manage due to his clever and mischievous nature. The child's name in this story is JB. Later that day, Jerry was around being his clever and mischievous self and someone referred to Jerry as JB. Billy took the idea and ran with it, and Jerry became officially JB and this became the name the family often used in reference to him.

When Jerry was a little older he started racing BMX bikes. For Jerry, it wasn't about winning the race, it was about doing something outrageous during the event. If he was'nt doing well in a particular race, he would come to the last jump and jump as high as he possibly could performing some harebrained stunt. Everyone would notice and cheer. No one would remember who won the race, but they would remember this crazy finish.

Speaking of a crazy finish, sometime in the 80's, Scotty, Donna, Kevin, and I and probably others went to a rock concert at the old coliseum. At the beginning of the concert we were all sitting together and we noticed someone sitting a couple of rows in front of us with the biggest wildest black hair going all directions, rocking out like this was the best concert ever. Once this person was convinced he had our full attention, he turned around as fast as possible with a huge grin on his face, pulls what turned out to be a wig off his head, to reveal that he actually had no hair on his head at all. You guessed it, it was Jerry. And like the BMX race, the only thing we all remembered about the concert is Jerry making us laugh.

In the late 90's, Jerry is already a grown man and working in the wrecker business. I was driving in downtown Austin and drove my car off the edge of a curb and knocked a hole in the oil pan. I didn't realize the damage. A few blocks later making another stop I pulled into a parking lot at the Free Wheeling bicycle shop and there was a large puddle of oil pooling under my car. The manager of the bike shop came outside and became quite unhappy about the oil in the lot since people were test riding bicycles. I left the car and called Jerry to see if he could pick up the car. He did, of course and he also cleaned up the oil. He had a way of coming through in tough situations.

Yes, he always came through for the family as well as strangers. In the subdivision Laura and I lived in, we had a neighbor that was a teacher at EANES ISD, her name is Betty. We were walking our dogs one day when she aproached me and ask if I was related to Jerry. I hesitated, because if you knew Jerry from his day at Eanes, you would have hesitated too. After realizing she was way too young to have been one of Jerry's teachers, I said yes, he is my nephew. She said, "He is one of the nicest people she had ever met!" It turned out she needed her car towed earlier that week and Jerry not only towed her car but brought her home talking with her like she was an old friend all along the way.

There are many good stories and memories about Jerry and I know I can't stand up here all day and share them. So I'll close with this last thought. A few weeks ago I was with my oldest friend, John, we have been friends since we were in first grade together and he spent a lot of time on Patterson Lane. We were visiting and catching up and although John had'nt seen Jerry in 30 years, he came right out and asked, "How's JB doing these days." Jerry is the kind of man who touched all of our lives and he will not be forgotten.

I WAS SO HAPPY WHEN YOU CALLED ME TO MEET YOU AT THE JEWELER TO HELP YOU FIND AN ENGAGEMENT RING FOR AMANDA, THEN I GOT THE CALL THAT YOU HAD PURCHASED 50 RED HEART BALLOONS ALONG WITH A LARGE ONE. YOU SAID MOM I NEED YOU TO COME OVER TO THE PARTY PIG TO TAKE THESE BALLOONS HOME AS I CAN'T GET THEM IN MY WRECKER. I WAS SO PROUD OF YOU FOR INCLUDING ME IN YOUR PLANS. YOU AND AMANDA EVEN HAD VIRGIL AND I GO TO THE HYATT FOR FAJITAS WITH YOU AFTER SHE SAID YES. AMANDA HAS BEEN LIKE A DAUGHTER TO US EVERY SINCE WE FIRST MET HER AND WE LOVE HER VERY MUCH.

Jerry was the first person I met in Austin. I can only say that my very positive opinion of him only improved with time.

His love for his wife and children were incredible. For him they were not simply words, but actions to live by.

Last week on the phone he offered to lend me his truck to get a winch in Bastrop.  He has been like that to me since I met him in '84...  His tow trucks always got to me before APD did.

He was a true friend, a stand-up guy, and a living proof that it is possible to overcome challenges and build a loving family and a thriving business, while keeping your friends and integrity along the way.

I'm sad that he's passed.  Sad beyond words.  Yeah, you'll see me cry.  I don't care.
