From an early age, James showed dedication and accomplishment in his pursuits, achieving the status of Eagle Scout. James then received his Masters of Electrical Engineering from Cornell University, where he also received his undergraduate degree in 1969. He was a member of the Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity. He later completed his MBA at Loyola University with a 4.0 GPA. He has worked for Westinghouse, HP, and was currently working for IBM Corporation. His passions included camping, and he was an avid fly fisherman. James was a lifetime member of the NRA. He was a loving grandfather and spent time teaching his grandchildren new skills during their time together.
James was son to Everett Whatley (deceased), and Marilyn Whatley. He has two brothers, John Whatley (Deborah), and William Whatley (Barbara). He was married for 41 years to Deborah (Mack) Whatley. He had three children with Deborah, all of whom are married and have given him grandchildren.
