Dr. James "Jim" Allan Shaw's journey on this earth came to a peaceful close on June 29, 2024, in Charlevoix, Michigan. At 66 years young, Jim's unexpected passing leaves a void in the hearts of many, yet his legacy of laughter, learning, and passion will continue to resonate.
Born on March 18, 1958, in Pontiac, Michigan, to Patricia Ann Shaw and John Allan Shaw, Jim's life was a testament to the power of curiosity and ambition. From his early days outside Detroit to his final chapter in Austin, Texas, Jim never stopped growing, learning, and striving. His path led him from mathematics at Alma College, where he graduated in 1980, to a Doctor of Psychology from Argosy University, from GTE (now Verizon) to academia at Ohio State University, always driven by a desire to understand and achieve.
Jim filled his personal life with the people and things he loved. He was a father, grandfather, and a friend with many lifelong friendships. With his ardency and knowledge, Jim touched countless lives through his private practice, Genuine Psychology, and his teaching at Concordia University, Texas Tech University, and Austin Community College.
He was a voracious reader of biographies and psychology books and even authored five books. He exercised daily, constantly training for his next 5k, and was a familiar sight taking long walks around the neighborhood. His love for sports was unmatched, from college football to cornhole and everything in between. Jim knew just about every classic rock song ever written. He couldn't help himself from singing along, educating you on an artist's background, or sharing a personal anecdote about when he first heard it when a song came on a nearby speaker.
As we bid farewell to Jim, we take comfort in knowing that his last day was spent in joyous communion with friends in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, near the waters he so loved. Though Jim's physical presence is no longer with us, his spirit lives on in the lives he touched, the wisdom he imparted, and the love he shared. As we remember Jim, let us carry forward his thirst for knowledge and faith, which he nurtured at Valley Ranch Baptist Church in Coppell, Texas, and The Austin Stone Community Church in Austin, Texas.
Jim is survived by his children, Stephanie Marie Wear (Matthew Brandon), Randall James Shaw (Bridgette Benavides), and Janie Elizabeth Shaw (Kyle Wayne Riggins); his grandchildren, Jackson, Marybeth, Macarthur, Anisten, Benjamin, Lochlen, and Joshua; and his siblings John Shaw (Sandy) and Cindy Bastian.
In lieu of flowers, we invite you to honor Jim's memory by supporting RBI Austin, an organization dedicated to youth sports, a cause that was close to his heart. They engage and develop inner-city Austin youth athletically, academically, and spiritually.
May Jim's life and memory be a blessing to all who knew him. A memorial service will be held at Cook-Walden Chapel of the Hills, 9700 Anderson Mill Road, Austin, TX 78750 on Friday, July 12, 2024 at 3 PM. Visitation will take place from 1:00-3:00 PM prior to the service.
Jim is now resting at peace in the Remembrance Gardens of Riverbend Church.
