Jim was born in Austin, Texas on November 21, 1934, to Victor Ruiz, Jr. and wife Jennie Porfirio Ruiz and graduated from Austin High School in 1952. Jim is survived by his spouse, Caroline T. Ruiz, sons, Jim Ruiz, Jr., Mike Ruiz, sister Anna Sanchez and brothers John Ruiz and Buddy Ruiz. Jim was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Daniel E. Ruiz and Victor Ruiz III.
Jim was a humble, loving husband, a dedicated and proud father, and selfless humanitarian. In his unassuming, gentle and soft persona, Jim was a strong and powerful force that touched the lives of many people in the Austin community.
As a Co-Director at the Salvation Army Youth Center (S.A.Y.C.) on Holly Street for over ten years, a common theme often repeated about Jim is reflected in these words, “The time I spent around Jim at the Youth Center – kept me out of trouble, taught me discipline, and instilled in me, the important values that made my life so much better.”
Jim loved his family dearly. Jim also loved sports. In later life, at the age of 76, Jim could be found, practicing or playing softball twice a week, at Krieg Fields and “Pan Am” with others that referred to their teams as the “Old Geezers League” – still good at the bat – though a bit slower in getting to first base!
Throughout his life, whether coaching, managing or umpiring little league sports, participating in the Senior Softball League or coping with the cancer that took his life, Jim always put others before himself. Jim left a legacy in the Austin community that touched the hearts of many and will be dearly missed by all who knew him…
