Jim was born on January 10, 1961, one of two sons of Sam H. Poteet and his wife, Margaret Ann Crymes. He grew up in Nashville, Tenn. and graduated from Montgomery Bell Academy. As a young man, Jim enjoyed fishing, hunting with family friends, football, skiing, and learning handiwork with his father.
He attended Auburn University and in 1983 earned a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering. He completed an MBA in 1997 from Prairie View A&M University. At Auburn, he met his wife, Rebecca Whittemore and they married in 1983.
For work he traveled and relocated extensively. He started out in computer engineering and management at UL in Tampa, Fla., and began work at COMPAQ in Houston, Tex. and Singapore. Later he accepted a position at Intel where he would work in Olympia, Wash.; Brentwood, Tenn.; and Portland, Ore. He moved with his family to Austin, Tex. in 2007. James worked for Dell from 2007-2012 and directed teams in regulatory compliance and validation. In fall 2012 he became an engineering director at National Instruments.
Jim attended Grace Covenant Church. He supported his sons in Boy Scouts and his daughters in tennis and lacrosse. Jim shared his love of the outdoors with his family through hiking and gardening. He was a supportive father and caring friend.
James is preceded in death by his father, Sam Holladay Poteet. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Rebecca Poteet; his children, Jacob, Lore, David, Brian, and Claire; his mother, Margaret Ann Poteet; and his brother, Sam H Poteet, Jr.
Jim brought joy to others through his jovial spirit and sense of humor. He enjoyed forming relationships and serving others with his time, energy, and abilities. He cherished his family, and sought to enrich their lives and bring them happiness.
The family will receive friends from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, February 13 at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home (3125 N Lamar Blvd). Memorial services will follow at 10:00 a.m. in the Weed-Corley-Fish Chapel. A reception will be held immediately after the service in the funeral home parlor.
