James Price Cummings, 82, passed away on Monday, February 4, 2008 at his home in Austin. J.P. was born in Fort Worth, TX on December 12, 1925 to Sam T. Cummings and Mary Belle Price Cummings. He graduated from Arlington Heights High School and served in the Navy in the Pacific during World War II and in the Korean Conflict. He graduated from Texas Christian University in 1949. He married Floydelle Howard on January 23, 1954. J.P. started his career at American General Mortgage in Fort Worth, TX. In 1961, he moved his family to Wichita Falls, TX where he assumed the presidency of Wichita Falls Savings & Loan (later Mercury Savings). In addition, he was a founder of Wichita Mortgage, Wichita Insurance and was an owner and board member of Parker Square Bank. In 1983, he moved to Austin to assume the presidency of Northwest Hills Savings & Loan. He retired in Austin in the mid-1980's when this business was sold. J.P. was an avid golfer and spent most of his days playing golf. He was a member of the Austin Country Club and Great Hills Country Club. In 2000, he was named "Sportsman of the Year" at Austin Country Club. He was a life member of the TCU Alumni Association. J.P. was a larger than life personality and endearingly hung a nickname on everyone he knew. He will be remembered as a generous man, a loving husband, father and grandfather and a good friend. J.P. is survived by his wife of 54 years, Delle; daughter, Terry Gaines of Austin, husband Richard; daughter, Mary McDougall of Vail, CO, husband Tim; son, Charles Cummings of Aurora, CO, wife Christy. He is survived by six grandchildren whom he loved very much: Trey, Paul and Crosby Gaines; Madeline McDougall; Jia and Lucy Cummings. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Dorothy Cummings Parker; and his beloved son, James P. Cummings, II. A visitation will be held on Wednesday, February 6, 2008 from 6-8 p.m.at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home, 3125 N. Lamar, Austin, TX. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, February 7, 2008 at 10 a.m. at St. Theresa's Catholic Church, 4311 Small Drive, Austin, TX. Friends and family are invited to a reception at Austin Country Club immediately after the funeral. Interment will be held at 2:00 p.m. at Austin Memorial Park. Pallbearers are Trey Gaines, Paul Gaines, Richard Gaines, Tim McDougall, Jim Jessup, David Bilder, Michael Dean and Charles Cummings. Honorary pallbearers are James S. Dubose, Fort Worth, TX, and his fellow golfers at Austin Country Club and Great Hills Country Club. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to www.thecancerconnection.org.
