On the afternoon of August 27, 2019, at 1:40 pm, James Vayliss Conn passed away at the age of 75 of natural causes at his home in Austin, Texas. Jim had no known chronic illness and his passing was completely unexpected.
Jim Conn was born to Cecil and Marion Conn on December 17, 1943, in Des Moines, Iowa. The family moved to Waukegan, Illinois. His parents passed away when he was very young, and he was raised by his brothers. Shortly after high school graduation, he was married to Marjorie and had 3 children. In 1974 the family moved to Houston, Texas, to start a new business. He was an entrepreneur and adventurer at heart his entire life and he went on to start many successful businesses.
Jim was a licensed, single-engine aviation pilot, family-focused adventurer, licensed scuba diver, and had a deep passion for golf. He spoke very fondly about his regular Monday golf group, and often played several times a week in his 50s to early 70s. His love for the sport was evident in one of his first entrepreneurial efforts, his golf driving-range in Grayslake, Illinois, in 1967.
In 1987 he opened a sports bar, The Tortuga, in San Jose Del Cabo with his good friend Paul, where many fond memories exist for our family and friends. What a great adventure he gave us all.
Jim is preceded in passing by his loved siblings: Robert “Joker” Conn & Valerie, Richard Conn, Thomas Conn & Mary, and sister Dorothy Wember. He is survived by his first wife Marjorie and their 3 children, Jeff, Kristen, Shelly, grandson Koury, and Richard Conn’s wife Joanne. Additional survivors include former spouse Brenda, her two 2 daughters Lisa and Chrissy, and grandson Jacob. And all of his many very close and special nieces and nephews and their children.
Everyone that knew Jim experienced his kindness and loved him very much.
Per Jim’s wishes, there will be no funeral service.
Your life was a blessing, your memory a treasure, you are loved beyond words and missed beyond measure.
