His early years were spent surrounded by family and friends in Ohio. Growing up during the 50’s and 60’s, his stories included: hunting and fishing with his Dad, being with friends, picking fruit for his grandma to make pies, listening to the best music, watching early black and white TV shows and, of course, those Saturday morning matinees. Those memories were what he liked to talk about the most.
After serving his country in the military, James worked various jobs but mostly as a machinist back in Ohio. He moved down to Texas in 1983 and started working in the property management field before finding his path within the City of Austin Police Department. James had a wonderful career in the APD Forensics Unit and retired as a Senior Crime Scene Specialist in early 2012.
James had a passion for the outdoors. He loved road trips, hunting, fishing, archery, camping, golfing and sipping coffee on the back deck while watching the birds and squirrels come to eat at the feeders he built. James was the ultimate “outdoor man.” However, he also enjoyed indoor activities such as bowling, card and dice games with family, friends, and watching old westerns on TV.
Sharing his passion for fishing was something that James really enjoyed. He taught many children and even some adults (including his wife) how to “work” the rod and reel. Catching the fish was only part of the whole process. Being on the water in his boat, deciding on a lure, getting into the right area, casting to the perfect spot, now those were some of his best moments. He proudly volunteered for many years as a boat captain for the CAST for Kids organization here in Texas.
James was preceded in death by his parents, Forest and Cleo Bixler and by his youngest son, Ronald Bixler. He is survived by his loving wife, Cathy Bixler; his son, Jim Bixler and wife Stacey of Nevada and his son, David Bixler and wife Chris of Ohio; his brothers, Bill Hemrick, Gene Bixler and Larry Bixler with their respective families and by his bonus brothers and sisters, aka the “In Laws.” James also leaves behind his grandchildren, great grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews that he loved very much.
The family would like to thank the members of Hospice Austin, their Home Care and Christopher House staffs and the staff of Brookdale Lakeway for their care and compassion during the last months of his life.
