Jacqueline Gray Golden passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 9th, 2016, in Austin, Texas. When she left us, the clouds wept, the sky grew a bit darker and the laughter stopped for a moment. Born April 7th, 1961, to Suzanne and Joe Bob Golden in Beaumont, Texas, Jackie was a force of intelligence and wit throughout her life. Jackie spent her childhood summers at Camp Longhorn, where she created lifelong memories and friendships. She graduated high school ahead of her peers and was a Junior at the University of Texas by the time she turned 19. A member of the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority, and proud to graduate from her father's alma mater, Jackie received her degree in Sociology and Art History in 1983. She was a voracious reader of books and newspapers, especially the New York Times. She was passionate, opinionated, and active in human rights and politics, including flying to Washington in 1992 for the March on Washington for Equal Rights. Jackie cared not if you were pauper or King; it only took a sense of humor and a sense of fairness for Jackie to befriend you. And when she did? That friendship was lifelong. She loved traveling and many a friend holds precious memories of trips to Austria, Belgium, the UK and Mexico. Oh, Mexico. Jackie loved Mexico, the spicier the food the better! In Mexico, she used her skill of the language to get into (and at times out of) some humorous situations. She loved to golf, hunt, fish, swim, SCUBA dive, play Scrabble, and, most of all to be with animals and her friends. She could have easily finished the Sunday Times Crossword in pen, though she preferred pencil (getting it all correct, just the same). She loved people! And people loved her.
Jackie is preceded in death by her father, Joe Bob Golden, Jr. She is survived by her mother, Suzanne Collier Golden of Jasper; brother, Andrew Warren Golden and his wife Lauralee Popejoy Golden of Jasper; brother, Joe Alan Golden and his wife Jill Boyd Golden of San Antonio; and sister, Katherine Elizabeth Golden. She is also survived by the nieces and nephews she adored: Andrew Zachary Golden, Catherine Grace Golden, Grayson Collier Golden, and Abby Leigh Golden. Jackie also leaves her lifelong friend, Christine Cordell, and their beloved Labrador, Abby.
In lieu of flowers, we are confident that Jackie would appreciate any donations to the Austin Humane Society, 124 West Anderson Lane, Austin, TX 78752
Services are on Saturday, July 16, 2016, at 10:00 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church, 329 North Bowie St., Jasper, Texas, 75951.
