Irene M. Hornung passed peacefully on June 17, 2012 in Cedar Park, Texas, at the age of 91. Irene was born on May 11, 1921 in New York City to Polish immigrants Karol Mueller and Cecelia Pawlikoska. She grew up in NYC, graduating magna cum laude from Queens College. While singing with an amateur Gilbert and Sullivan company, she met and married Albert J. Hornung, Jr.
Irene spent most of her married life in North Bellmore, New York, as a stay-at-home mom to her daughter Allison. She spent many happy hours gardening, playing the piano, and sewing her own clothes. She instilled in her daughter her own love of animals and reading, as well as appreciation of art and music. Irene was a Girl Scout leader and worked as a procurer for the Nassau County Parks Dept.
Irene and Albert retired to New Port Richey, Florida in 1982 where she learned to play golf. With the passing of Albert in 2009 after 66 years of marriage, Irene moved to Austin to be near her daughter. She continued to be an avid reader and bridge-player until her final six months. She is survived by her daughter Allison Hornung of Austin, Texas.
A Catholic prayer service will be held at the Cook-Walden Chapel of the Hills Funeral Home at 9700 Anderson Mill Road, Austin, TX 78752 on Saturday July 28th at 12:30 pm. This will be followed by a celebration service at Unity Church of the Hills, 9905 Anderson Mill Road, at 1:15. A private interment will be held at Remembrance Gardens later in the day.
