Hugh Charlton Perry II, born in Ocala, Florida, died Friday, November 29, 2013 in Austin, Texas, his home since 1971. He was 72. His parents were Hugh Charlton Perry and Elizabeth Waters Perry Moody. He was the great-great grandson of one of Florida's founding families, Peter Boyer Perry and wife Elizabeth Duke.
Hugh was a graduate of the University of Florida and was a residential homebuilder in Austin, Texas since 1977. He was a United States Army veteran. Hugh was a devoted husband and father and was involved in youth activities for both of his sons.
Hugh was an accomplished athlete, excelling in football, baseball, and tennis and in later years rowing. He was a long-time member of the Austin Rowing Club, having served many terms on the Board of Directors, including terms as president and boathouse operations director. According to the ARC president, Kourtney de Haas, "Hugh's tall figure, complete with tool belt and circular saw, led many construction projects at ARC…" Hugh was proud of his accomplishment of building the boathouse for the Texas Rowing Center.
An avid University of Florida Gator fan, Hugh was a lifetime member of the University of Florida Alumni Association, as well as a local supporter of the Lone Star Gator Club.
Hugh loved animals, domestic and wild, and many stray cats and dogs found a loving home with the Perry's.
Hugh is predeceased by his parents, Hugh Charlton Perry and Elizabeth Waters Perry Moody, and his sister, Jan Blanchard. Hugh is survived by his wife of 48 years, Peggy Williams Perry, son Hugh Charlton Perry III (Courtney) and their son Benjamin Ellison; and son Roger Farthing Perry, all from Austin, Texas; sister, Charleen Yarborough (James "Buddy") of Belleview, Florida; nephew Spencer Yarborough (fiancée Karey Carlton) of Melbourne, Florida; niece Leigh McCullough (Bob) and their daughter Sydney of Buford, Georgia; brother-in-law Robert Blanchard of Raleigh, North Carolina, his son Walker Blanchard of Wake Forest, North Carolina, and his daughter Martha Carr (John) and their children Kaycee and Jack, all of Point Cook, Australia. He is survived by stepsister Virginia Moody Gwaltney (Joe) and their son, Jeff Gwaltney, and their daughter, Jennifer Griffiths (Dave) and her daughters Jordyn and Emily, all of Belleview, Florida. Sister-in-law Jane Williams (Jackie) and their children, Kelly and Amy, all of Clinton, Tennessee. Extended family, Virginia Mann Sigman (Tom), of Ocala, Florida and their son Dwayne of Jacksonville, Florida and a daughter Karen Pinner and her daughter Jenny of Palatka, Florida.
Interment will be December 5, 11:00 AM at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens, 5740 S. Pine Ave., Ocala, FL, 34480. A gathering in Celebration of Life including lunch will follow the service at The Elks Club, 702 NE 25th Avenue, Ocala 34470. A memorial service will be held in Austin, TX on December 14, 1:00 PM at St. Stephens Episcopal School Chapel, 6500 St. Stephens Drive, Austin TX, 78746, reception to follow.
