Howard Gilbert Singer was born May 15th, 1926 and passed away September 10th, 2016. He was raised in Larchmont, New York but always considered Texas his home. For his loving children and grandchildren, this amazing man was the standard bearer of integrity, generosity, high ideals and humor in the face of all odds, as well as a devoted husband, and a dear and loyal friend to many.
A Navy man during WWII, he was pre-flight at North Carolina University until the war ended, and he completed his college years at Duke and Yale where he played football and earned his degree in engineering before settling in Houston. There he enjoyed a career in building, developing and commercial real estate, developed neighborhoods to provide affordable homes for returning WWII vets, and built the Medical Towers, once the tallest building in the medical center, as well as numerous subdivisions that beautified the city.
An avid sailor and world traveler, upon retirement this good natured, talented and fun loving man split his time each year between Houston and Boothbay Harbor, ME where he cultivated many lifelong friendships and pranked his grandkids every chance he got.
He was preceded in death by his father Seel Singer, his mother Rae Lustbader Singer and his brother Arnold Morton Singer. He is survived by his daughters and their husbands, Lorrie and Bradley Kopp, Robin and Dale Mowrer, and Patti Singer, his grandchildren (and spouses) Briana (Dan), Adam, Eddie (Emily), Lilli (Jesse), Alex and Kyle, and great grandchildren Oliver and Hiro, and by his beloved nieces and nephew: Lisa, Susan, Jacqueline, and Reagan and their families.
Howard made friends everywhere he went, and will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
Funeral services held for immediate family Tuesday Sept 13th in Austin, Texas. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Alzheimer’s Foundation, Disabled American Veterans, and Paws for Purple Hearts.
