Henry Calderon, a lifelong resident of Austin, Texas, was born on February 17, 1951, and peacefully passed away on September 26, 2024, at the age of 73, surrounded by his beloved family. His guardian angel gently led him to his heavenly home.
Henry's life was filled with family, friends, plants and flowers, food, work, and fun—he found an abundance of each in his 73 years. Throughout his journey, he maintained grace, kindness, compassion, and a deep appreciation for beauty, while expressing endless gratitude for the wonderful and fulfilled life he led.
Born to Lydia and Enrique Calderon, Henry was the eldest of nine siblings. He attended San Jose Catholic School, Fulmore Junior High, St. Edwards Catholic School, and Travis High School. He pursued higher education at Central Texas College, earning his Print Master’s certificate, and later continued his studies at Austin Community College. He built a career as a Printer with Whitley Company before becoming a Master Printer at Lithoprint Company. His dedication to professional growth eventually led him to a long and successful career as an insurance agent with New York Life, where he made a profound difference in the lives of countless clients over 31 years.
Henry was an active member of his community from an early age, serving as a Boy Scout Junior Leader Instructor and as an altar boy at San Jose Catholic Church. His commitment to service extended throughout his life. He volunteered with St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church, the Boys and Girls Club, and was a proud member of the East Austin Lions Club and the Knights of Columbus at St. John Neumann.
In 1977, Henry formed the men’s softball team, the Austin Spurs, which was more than just a team—it was a family. Henry’s generosity knew no bounds as he spent countless hours fundraising for team expenses, often contributing from his own pocket to ensure everyone could participate. His love for sports and community made weekend games feel like family reunions.
Henry was a man of God, attending church regularly not out of obligation, but because he was driven by his faith and love for his community. He even sponsored a child in Africa for many years, sending letters and financial support, exemplifying his selfless spirit.
Henry was predeceased by his younger brother, Edward Calderon; his parents, Lydia and Enrique Calderon; his mother-in-law, Rebecca Ortiz; and his grandmother, Maria Perez.
He is survived by his loving wife, Sylvia Calderon, his three daughters, Erica, April (Chris Larson), and Monica (David Sanderson); his grandchildren, Danielle, Jacob, Ethan, and Luke; his eight siblings, Dan Calderon (Sylvia), Rose Levario (Val), Gloria Davis (Louis), Pat Covarrubias (Ignacio), Mike Calderon (Delores), Ernie Calderon (Melinda), Louise Calderon, Carol Briggs (Armon) and many extended family members and friends.
Henry’s legacy is one of unwavering light, generosity, and dedication to his family and community. He was an anchor to his loved ones and a beacon of kindness, touching countless lives with his selflessness and compassion.
Family and friends are invited to celebrate Henry’s life at Weed Corley Fish Funeral Home, located at 2620 S Congress Ave, Austin, TX, on Thursday, October 10th, 2024. The viewing will begin at 4:00 pm, followed by a rosary recitation at 7:00 pm. A funeral mass will be held at St. Ignatius Martyr Church on Friday, October 11th, 2024, at 10:00 am, followed by a burial service at Memorial Park Cemetery, 2800 Hancock Dr, Austin, TX 78731.
Henry’s bright spirit, love for his family, and dedication to helping others will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
