Harry Alvin Sandberg, Jr.

Harry A. Sandberg, Jr., 91, was born on April 1, 1921, in Austin, Texas to Harry A. Sandberg, Sr. and Elfrieda Hedberg Sandberg. He lived most of his life in Austin, except for some time during World War II spent in Uvalde and Houston. He married Dorothy Ellanora Carlson from Georgetown, Texas on April 20, 1947, in Austin, Texas. He and Dorothy celebrated 55 years of marriage before Mrs. Sandberg passed away in 2002.

Harry was a member of Tarrytown United Methodist Church for 64 years, serving on many boards and committees during that time. He was a faithful member of the Fellowship Sunday School class at TUMC.

Harry graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a degree in Civil Engineering and then worked at the Texas Highway Department (Materials and Tests Division) as a professional engineer, retiring in 1977. He was a member of the Texas Society of Professional Engineers.

He spent his retirement years enjoying time with his wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He and Dorothy travelled some. He volunteered with West Austin Caregivers and Habitat for Humanity. One of his hobbies was woodworking, a skill he acquired from his father, and he used his talents to create treasured pieces for many family members. He loved “tinkering in his shop.” Harry also made repairs for family and friends. Everyone knew that he could fix or build just about anything.

Harry is survived by his very special cousin, Janelle Brumley, of San Antonio; his brother, Kenneth Sandberg; sister, Amy Kinane; daughter, Jeanne Koonce; daughter, Nancy Watson, and her husband, Luke; son, Alan Sandberg and his wife, Trudie; son, Kevin Sandberg, and his wife, Audrey; 10 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren, and numerous other family members and friends.

The family wishes to acknowledge and thank Dr. Tom McHorse, Dr. James Hull, Dr. Matt Stahlman, the staff at Seton Hospital, the staff at Hearthstone Nursing Facility in Round Rock, and Mark, Chryses, and Sarah from Care-Minded Home Care.

Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family from six o’clock until eight o’clock in the evening, on Tuesday, the 5th of June 2012, at Cook-Walden Funeral Home, 6100 North Lamar Boulevard, Austin, Texas.

A graveside service will be conducted at nine o’clock in the morning on Wednesday, the 6th of June 2012, at Cook-Walden Capital Parks Cemetery, Pflugerville, Texas.

A Memorial Service will be conducted at three o’clock in the afternoon on Wednesday, the 6th of June 2012, at Tarrytown United Methodist Church, 2601 Exposition Boulevard, Austin, Texas 78703.

In lieu of flowers and customary remembrances, the family requests memorials be made to Tarrytown UMC, West Austin Caregivers, Habitat for Humanity, or the charity of your choice.
