Harold G. Daves, a resident of Baton Rouge for 60 years, passed away peacefully at the age of 87 surrounded by his family in Austin, Texas. He was born November 15, 1928 on a farm in Lowndes County, Mississippi to Ida Ethel Daves and Arthur Laney Daves. He was the youngest of seven children. Harold received his Bachelor of Science degree from Mississippi State University and went on to serve his country with honor in the Korean War. Harold was attached to the U.S. Army seventh infantry division, 31st Regiment, second Battalion, and attained the rank of first Lieutenant while serving in combat.
After Korea, he attended Louisiana State University Law School and was admitted to the Bar. While at LSU, he met the love of his life, Mary Moseley of Opelousas, Louisiana. The couple married on December 27, 1957 and raised their family of four children in Baton Rouge. While utilizing his law degree, Harold opened Daves Insurance agency and pursued a career in insurance sales and real estate investments.
Harold was passionate about building, and for many years he enjoyed collecting old wood and cypress beams, which he later used in the creation of their family home. Harold's greatest joy was the company of family and friends. He supported his family in all of their endeavors and placed his love of family at the top of his list of priorities. In that regard, he cared for the things that mattered most. He had a generous heart and was always willing to help anyone in need.
Harold and his wife Mary moved to Austin in 2012 to be with their four children and eleven grandchildren, where he spent the last five years of his life. He was a member of the Shepherd of the Hills Presbyterian Church, Austin, Texas. He was not in a hurry to leave this earth, but was ready to go home with his faith at the end. He is survived by his wife Mary, his children, John Daves and his wife Lori; Scott Daves and his wife Lynne; Charlotte Daves Benson and her husband Craig; and Mary Margaret Daves Carrigee, along with eleven grandchildren.
