A native Austinite born in 1946, the son of Hans and Frances (Brock) Turley, he attended Austin public schools and played football for Austin High School, graduating in 1964. He maintained lifelong friendships with his beloved Austin High classmates, Loyal Forever. After graduating, he attended the University of Texas where he played scholarship football his freshman year. He graduated from UT in 1970 with a Bachelor’s of Business Administration Degree in Accounting with an additional 21 hours of Computer Science studies.
He met his wife while working at the Systems Division of the Texas State Auditor’s Office as a CPA. In 1982, he and his partner founded Micro Information Products where they developed fund accounting software for nonprofit organizations, foundations, and governmental agencies. He sold the company to Sage Group in 2001 after many successful years of business and it is now owned by Abila. MIP Fund Accounting continues be used today by more than 13,000 organizations.
An avid football fan, he loved watching the Longhorns and Dallas Cowboys play. He was a brilliant engineer, machinist, and inventor and enjoyed designing and building his own circuit boards which he used to control the dampers on his BBQ pit and create his own Halloween animatronics. He had a beautiful garden filled with tomatoes, jalapenos and other produce that he grew with his wife. Together they canned many mason jars of fresh salsa, tomatoes, and jalapenos for their family. He was actively involved with Boy Scouts of America Troop 5 in Austin, Texas, attending meetings and campouts and teaching merit badge classes along with his son. He had a keen memory for history and little known facts, including the ability to remember French vocabulary from 7th grade to solve crossword puzzles.
He is survived by his wife of 33 years, BJ Turley; his daughter, Amanda Turley and her fiancé, Victor Pierce; his son, Trey Turley; his sister, Ginger Soule; his nephews, Dave Soule, Steve Soule, and Seth Ringstaff; his cousin, Martha Katona; and his great nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 2PM on Sunday, October 1st at Cook-Walden Funeral Home at 6100 North Lamar Austin TX, 78752.
