A matriarch of Old Austin passed away Sunday, January 22, 2006. Hallie Houston Burns, famous for an infectious laugh, grace and the love of life and family, was born May 7, 1919 in Austin. She grew up on the Bremond Block at 706 Guadalupe. Hallie attended Pease Elementary, Austin High School, and The University of Texas where she was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma. Hallie was married for over 50 years to Austin banker John S. Burns who preceded her in death in 1998. Hallie was active in many civic organizations including Town Lake Beautification, Junior League, Settlement Club, Junior Helping Hand and the Seton Development Fund. She is survived by daughter, Hallie Burns Eads of Houston, son, John S. Burns Jr. and his wife Debby of Austin, and son, William Burns and wife Laura of Dripping Springs; seven grandchildren, Ellen Burns Hack and husband Christian, John S. Burns III and wife Stacy, Hallie Eads, John Carr Eads, Kari Burns, Houston Burns and Hawkins Burns; five great-grandchildren; a sister, Catherine Umstattd and numerous nieces and nephews. She was also preceded in death by her brother William B. Houston. A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 25, 2006 at the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd with The Reverend G. David Fikes officiating.
