Hal J. Harris, Sr., 83, devoted husband, father and grandfather, went to be with his Lord and Savior on the 27th of May 2012 in Austin, Texas surrounded by his family. Born on the 21st of September 1928, he grew up in Drexel, North Carolina. He graduated from Baylor University where he met his wife Pat. Austin has been their home since 1968.
Hal loved his Lord and his family and served faithfully through his church, Hyde Park Baptist, where he was past Chairman of Deacons and a Sunday School Director for many years. He spent most of his career in the insurance business working for Travelers and later started his own agency. He was a certified life underwriter and a past president of the Austin chapter of Certified Life Underwriters.
Hal also loved the Texas Baptist Children’s Home in Round Rock. He participated twenty years in the annual Texas Baptist Children’s Home golf marathon helping raise funds for children and families in need. Hal served on the Board of Directors of both the Texas Baptist Children’s Home and Children at Heart Ministries. He loved spending time with his family and friends, reading, playing bridge and golf. He also served in the United States Navy.
Hal is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Pat; three sons, Hal Jr. and wife, Connie, Scott and wife, JiYoon, Andy and wife, Suzanne; his grandchildren, Tyler Harris, Michelle Herring and husband, Nick, Drew Harris and Hal’s sister, Gleta Byrd.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Texas Baptist Children’s Home, 1101 North Mays Street, Round Rock, TX 78664, or Hyde Park Baptist Church, 3901 Speedway, Austin, TX.
The family will receive friends from six until eight o’clock in the evening on Wednesday, the 30th of May 2012 at Cook-Walden Funeral Home, 6100 North Lamar Boulevard, Austin, TX. A memorial service will be held at eleven o’clock in the morning on Thursday, the 31st of May 2012 at Hyde Park Baptist Church. A private graveside service will precede the memorial service.
