Guadalupe Q. Nunez

Guadalupe was born in New Sweden, TX, on February 3, 1930, the son of Juan and Maria Nuñez.

Guadalupe was honorably discharged from the United States Army in 1953. He retired after 20 years of service for U.S. Foods, formerly White Swan Institutional Foods.

Mr. Nuñez had a passion for baseball throughout his life. He was a member of the U.S. Army traveling baseball team during his active service. After his discharge, his passion for the game continued through his association with the men's softball fast pitch community in East Austin where he earned the reputation as a long ball hitter and earned the nickname Lupe "Mickey Mantle" Nuñez. During his involvement with the Pan-American Men's Fast Pitch Softball League, he served as a mentor and coach to many aspiring young ball players. His love and knowledge of baseball has now been passed along to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Mr. Nuñez is preceded in death by his loving wife of 35 years, Teresa M. Nuñez and is survived by his children, Dennis Arredondo, Gladys and her husband Rogelio Rocha, Glorianna and her husband Zeke Loera, Glenda and her husband Daniel Silguero, Sandra and her husband Roman Guerra, Jr.; 16 grandchildren; and 7 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sisters, Olivia Estrada and Mary Ann Coy; his aunt, Juanita Mercado; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family would like to extend sincerest gratitude to Adult Care of Austin and Dr. Allen Sonstein for their many years of outstanding care for Mr. Nuñez. In addition, a heart-felt thank you to the staff of Silverado Hospice, especially Lisa, Alex, Nancy, Derrick, Laquisha, and Jeannine. Their tireless support, care and kindness made Mr. Nuñez's final journey home peaceful and dignified.

Recitation of the Holy Rosary will begin at 7:00 pm on Sunday, March 19 at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home.

Holy mass will be officiated by Fr. Florencio Rodriguez at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church at 10:00 am on Monday, March 20, followed by interment at Assumption Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Paul Alvarez, Jesse Colunga, Christopher Coy, Robert Garza, Richard Mendoza and Edward Moya. Honorary pallbearers are Jim Limon, Richard Martinez, and David Rios.
