Gregory S McVey, born January 22, 1958, in Pittsburgh, PA, the oldest of twins born to adoptive parents Robert and Joyce (Sweet) McVey, passed away at home on April 24, 2024, with his beloved hounds Sawyer and Cayenne at his side.
Greg graduated Valley High School in New Kensington, PA in 1976 and enrolled at Penn State University, ultimately earning a BS in Civil Engineering. There he met his future wife Elizabeth Shupp, and they were married in Dallas, Texas in May 1983.
Greg’s career was a testament to his passion for engineering and his dedication to hard work and fortitude. He embarked on his journey as a Quality Control and Cost Engineer with Gordon H Ball, later moving to Morrison Knudsen Corp where he quickly rose to Project Manager. During his 13 years with Morrison Knudsen Corp Greg managed over $1 Billion in projects in 3 different states, transitioning to Vice President and Construction Manager on a $320 million joint venture project with Fluor-Daniel Corp. Moving to Austin TX in 2001 Greg worked for the Zachry Construction Corp and Balfour Beattie Infrastructure rising to Operations Manager overseeing $2.5 billion in projects in Texas and 8 states in the Central and Southeast United States. In 2014 Greg took a job with Texas Sterling Construction moving to Senior Vice President and General Manager and finally as Senior Vice President. In December 2023 Greg went to work for Posillico Civil, Inc. as a Regional Director. Posillico was looking to expand operations in Texas and Greg was looking forward to the challenge. Greg excelled in rescuing failing projects and was instrumental in turning around operations at Texas Sterling’s South Texas operations. His dedication to engineering and integrity will be missed.
Greg’s professional journey included several moves around the country, and, through it all, his wife Liz was by his side. No matter where they were located, Liz always found a way to make it a home. Together they enjoyed hiking in many state and national parks including San Gabriel, Yellowstone, Yosemite and Olympic NP, and skiing. Although they had no children, Greg and Liz were devoted paw parents active in dog rescue programs and together they rescued and raised numerous Basset and Blood Hounds, among other large breeds, giving 12 adopted dogs their best forever home.
Greg enjoyed basketball and golf, actively playing both sports well into his adult life. He even taught his wife how to play golf so they could share the pastime together. Greg was also an avid Penn State and Steelers fan. He appreciated good barbeque and bourbon, and had a penchant for recounting entertaining stories, usually involving the dogs, that his family immensely enjoyed hearing.
Greg was preceded in death by his wife Liz, Dexter and 9 other Basset and Blood Hounds, and his parents, Robert and Joyce McVey of New Kensington, PA.
Greg is survived by his brother Jeff McVey and wife Chris of Lower Burrell, PA, his in-laws Bruce and Marie Shupp of Brant Lake, NY; sister-in-law Jane Bennett and husband Bruce of Chestertown, NY; brothers in-laws Jonathan Shupp of Chestertown, NY and Frank Shupp and wife Becca of Hilton Head, SC; nieces Alicia McVey and husband Mark Shearer of Washington, PA, Danielle Pasakarnis and husband Tom of Alexandria, VA, and Joanna Sockoloskie and husband Keith of Mechanicsville, MD; Erica Remington (Greg Dower) and son Carter of Pottersville, NY; Annie Lafontaine and husband Dennis, and daughter Vanessa of Lake George, NY; Anne Shupp and Sarah-Kate Shupp of Hilton Head, SC.; and grandnieces/nephews.
