Glen Getty passed away on May 24, 2018 in Austin, Texas at the age of 95. He was born in Shelton, Washington on May 19, 1923 to Mervin and Lucy Getty. He graduated from Shelton High School in 1940 and attended St. Martin's College (now University) for two years when his education was interrupted by World War II. He joined the Army Air Force Aviation Cadet Program graduating from Pilot Training on May 23, 1944.
His first assignment as a Second Lieutenant was Bergstrom Army Air Field, Austin, Texas where he met his future wife, Shirley Day. Shirley was the Fashion Administrator for Yaring's ladies apparel store. After completing Troop Carrier Training at Bergstrom Glen was assigned to a tour of duty in Japan and Korea. When he returned from this assignment, he and Shirley were married on July 16, 1949.
Glen made the Air Force his career and he and Shirley and their two sons enjoyed his many world-wide assignments and the wonderful relationships they entailed. He ended his career as a Command Pilot with more than 5000 hours of military flying time. He was also a rated Air Force Glider Pilot. His awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit and the Distinguished Flying Cross. He was a graduate of the Armed Forces Staff College. He retired in 1972 after thirty years of active duty. His final assignment was in the office of Legislative Liason, office of the Secretary of the Air Force where he served for six years.
Colonel Getty was pre-deceased by his wife Shirley. He is survived by his two sons David and Jeffrey, three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, June 1st at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home North with a reception to follow. A private graveside will be held at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio at a later date.
