Gerald Lee McGray of Austin, Texas died peacefully at the age of 84 on July 9, 2024. He was born on December 18, 1939 in Orange, Texas, to Josie Isabel Belile and George McGray. He received a Bachelor’s degree in Economics from the University of Houston and soon thereafter moved to Austin to begin a long career in Land Surveying.
He became a Registered Professional Land Surveyor in 1979 and he opened McGray & McGray Land Surveyors, Inc. in 1981. He specialized in GPS data collection and processing and authored numerous articles on geodetic surveying and GPS. He was a columnist for the Texas Surveyor Magazine and instructor of TSPS and TxDOT seminar programs throughout Texas. He served as Program Director of the Land Surveying Technology Department of Austin Community College, Director of the Texas Society of Professional Surveyors, Editorial Director of POB Surveyor Magazine, Editor of Professional Surveyor Magazine, and Trustee of the Texas Surveyors Foundation among many other accolades. In his younger years, he enjoyed running, bicycling, fishing, and playing the guitar. Most of all, he enjoyed being a dad.
Gerald is survived by his daughter, Josie McGray Sewell, his previous wife, Judy McGray, his brother, Joel Johnson, and his beloved grandchildren Virginia, Carl and Connor Sewell. His devoted cat, Millie, was always by his side.

A private service will be held at Weed Corley Fish on August 3, 2024. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the Parkinson’s Foundation.
