Laten began his career working for the IRS in July 1966, right out of high school, and retired in 2000.
After retirement, he started playing the piano. He played for several retirement homes such as Westminster Manor in Austin, and others in Pflugerville, Taylor, Georgetown and Round Rock – just to name a few. He also played for parties, his church and in bands with Chip Sneed and Skinny Don Keeling. Laten became a roadie for the late Don Walser and was made an honorary member of the Austin Exchange Club. He was a very outgoing person.
Laten enjoyed travelling. He and his wife went to Alaska, Panama Canal, Caribbean Islands, Mexico, Hawaii, and in 2013 took a trip to Europe. He always said he would like to go back to Alaska one day.
In the early seventies, Laten became a deacon at the First Presbyterian Church in Austin.
He is survived by his wife Sandra Gaye; sister Sally S. Logsdon and husband John; cousin Lila S. Bohl; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Gilbert Searight and Virginia Searight Williams.
