George was born in Gordon, NE on March 10, 1928. He was the oldest of five siblings. At the age of six, George made the first of many lifetime moves to another small town, Valentine, NE. Three years later, the family moved again to Rayville, MO. At age fourteen, George’s family moved back to Gordon where his father passed away shortly thereafter.
George completed High School in Gordon in 1945 and enlisted in the Air Force. Six months later, he mustered out and earned a pre med degree at Chadron State, NE and attended Northwestern University medical school in Chicago, IL. He graduated in 1954.
In 1947, George married Margaret Lucille Monkman. They would have four children; two boys and two girls. They were divorced in 1962.
In 1958, George began his Air Force career accepting a commission as a Captain. His first assignment was as a flight surgeon. He was stationed at Langley AFB in VA, where he met and married Billie Hobart in 1965. Then it was north to Alaska and from there, they moved to Wichita, KS where George was Commander of the base hospital. Then they moved back to Myrtle Beach AFB and finally to Clovis, NM and Ft Worth, TX. (76-78)
After retiring from the Air Force in 1978, George and Billie made the move to Houston, TX and finally to Austin, TX in 1980. Billie passed away in 2005 and in 2007, George married Martha Casper and they made their home at the Atrium Retirement and Assisted Living Community in Austin.
George joined the Northwest Austin Rotary Club in 1981. He had 31 years of Perfect Attendance. He was a Major Benefactor and a Paul Harris Fellow ten times over. He was Club President 1999/2000.
George is survived by his wife, Martha and her son Eric Reininger. He is also survived by his children: Lester Lewis (Vicki), Anchorage AK; Michael Lewis (Jean), Santa Cruz, CA: Jeanette Lisefski (Donald), Fairfield, IA; Karen Britton (Steve), Cottage Grove MN; Billie McCulley (Jerry), Georgetown, TX. Other survivors include 11 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held Tuesday, February 13, 2018, at 1:00 pm, Cook-Walden Chapel of the Hills Funeral Home, 9700 Anderson Mill Road, Austin, TX 78750.
