Our father, Genaro Garcia Leal, 83 years, was born on June 25, 1934 to Jesus V. Leal, Sr. and Refaelita Garcia in Seguin, Texas. He married Filomena Leos on October 17, 1951 and had two daughters.
Genaro never met a stranger. His compassion and acceptance of everyone made him an excellent role model for his children and grandchildren. His love was shared not only with God and family but also with friends and strangers.
Throughout his lifetime he served the Lord in numerous capacities. While he was a member of Christo Rey, he served in the Joy Group, Guadalupanas, lector, Eucharistic minister, visiting the homebound and marriage preparation. After leaving Christo Rey, he became a member of Holy Family Catholic Church. Even though he was not able to serve in a ministry due to declining health, he supported the church in every possible capacity.
After he retired from the Austin American Statesman in January 1999, he enjoyed traveling to various countries and states. His favorite places were the Holy Land, Mexico, Colorado and Yellowstone National Park. He was an avid photographer. His favorite subjects were his family and friends. He was an excellent cook and his specialty was making tamales during the Christmas holidays. The house was always filled with family and friends who enjoyed his cooking.
