Gary Guthrie, Jr., age 42 of Austin, went to be with the Lord on the 7th of October, 2011. He was born in Austin to Gary, Sr. and Brenda Guthrie on the 7th of November, 1968. Gary was a true gentleman with a kind soul and a giving spirit.
During his high school years, he excelled in football, earning All-State as a defensive tackle. After graduating as a Reagan football and track athlete, he attended Trinity Valley in Athens, Texas and also Southern Utah on football scholarships and earned All- Conference. His love for football and sports did not stop there; he became the coach for Hyde Park Baptist Church, coaching football, girls’ basketball and track. He loved his volunteer work and mentored and coached many children, but most importantly, he was a mentor to his youngest brother.
Gary was predeceased by his grandparents. He is survived by his daughter, Kalyn; parents, Gary Sr. and Brenda; brothers, Lonnie and Adam and his wife, Mindy; niece, Faith; nephew, Jonathan; and numerous other family members and friends.
A visitation will be held from six o’clock in the evening until eight o’clock, Monday the 10th of October at Cook-Walden Funeral Home.
The Funeral Service will be conducted at eleven o’clock in the morning, Tuesday the 11th day of October, 2011 at Promise Land Church, 1504 E. 51st Street in Austin, with Bishop Kenneth Phillips officiating. Interment will be conducted at two o’clock in the afternoon at Lower Knobbs Cemetery near Knobbs Baptist Church.
