Forest G. Hill

Forest G. Hill died July 7th at the age of 97. Born in Star, Texas, he was raised on a farm in Goldthwaite. He attended a one-room schoolhouse and left home to attend UT with a $100 in his pocket. In college, met his wife Helen Shudde whom he married in 1943. He ran for the UT track team and was a lifelong runner. He served in the Army Air Corps and after WWII, earned his doctorate from Columbia and taught at Berkeley and University of Buffalo. He jumped at the invitation to join the UT economics faculty in 1960.

Always interested in current affairs, Forest was active in progressive causes and university academic issues. He served on several social justice organization boards and was a founder of LAMP (Learning Activities for Mature People). He also founded Yeller Dawgs, which he attended weekly until his death. An avid traveler, Forest began writing poetry in his '80s and composed over 300 pieces. Many were political but more focused on childhood and university experiences.

He is survived by Barbara Hill, Robin H. Roque, Kenneth Hill, and Jessica Hill, his three grandchildren: Katrina, Jeremy, and Kyle and long-time friend and confidante Millie Douglas.

A memorial service celebrating his life will be held at 2:00 PM, on Sunday, September 3, 2017 at Westminister Manor Nursing Home, 4100 Jackson Avenue, Austin, Texas 78731. Gifts in Dr. Hill's memory can be made to Southern Poverty Law Center, Texas Freedom Network or ACLU.
