Evelyn Louise Smith, passed away peacefully on March 2, 2024, surrounded by her beloved daughter and son-in-law, at the age of 82. Evelyn Louise was born on October 3, 1941. She was the second of six children, born to Isaac and Thelma Louise Hawk. Evelyn was baptized at a young age at Mount Gilead Baptist Church in Cuthbert, GA.
She attended and graduated from Randolph County Training School in Cuthbert, Georgia. Cuthbert was a small town, so like many of her peers, after graduation, Evelyn joined the mass migration to Boston, Massachusetts and left the south. She joined her older sister, Barbara Ann in Boston, MA. They were so close and best friends. Evelyn joined her big sister in becoming a member of Morning Star Baptist Church in Boston, MA and began her career with New England Telephone and after working for 30 years, she retired.
In Boston, Evelyn grew into a beautiful, sharp-witted woman, and had a beautiful daughter, Yvette Louise.
Evelyn's sense of humor was original, classic and hilariously funny. She was the funniest around the dinner table, leaving family members holding their stomachs from laughter. Her humor was so creative and witty. Evelyn hosted all of our family events where we would all laugh and eat her delicious food and cakes, especially her Applesauce cake!
She had the mind of a writer and in her early years wrote short stories of romance, adventure, and suspense. In fact, at one time she had been asked to participate in a writer's club for up and coming writers. She would have received further instructions in becoming a writer. She did not pursue the offer, though. Instead, her main focus throughout her life's journey was family, especially her daughter, Yvette.
Evelyn enjoyed quality time with her family, watching her favorite shows like Gunsmoke, Soap Operas and Andy Griffith. She loved listening to classic rock, Sam Cooke and the Soulsters and The Dixie Hummingbirds and she LOVED her trips to the casino and Cape Cod, MA.
Her life was like a rainbow arched across the sky with its parade of colors with each color representing significant pieces of her life, i.e., family, friends, and of course, humor.
Evelyn is joining her mother and father (Thelma Louise and Isaac Hawk Sr.), sister (Betty Jean Hawke) brother (Isaac Hawke), and niece (Nanette Hawk) and nephew (Nigel Gray) in heaven and we are blessed to know they were waiting to welcome her with love.
Evelyn is survived by her daughter and son in law, Yvette Louise and Wesley Williams, her sisters, Barbara A Watson; Vivian Coleman and Gwendolyn Hawke, her nieces, Patricia Cherry; Antoinette Coleman; Andrea Morris; Heather Hawk; Danielle Hawk; Tajah Coleman and Mckenzie Morris, and her nephews, Eddie Coleman Jr; Brandon Coleman, and Isaac Hawk Jr. She will be greatly missed and loved forever by her family.
A funeral service for Evelyn will be held Thursday, March 14, 2024 from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at Cook-Walden Chapel of the Hills, 9700 Anderson Mill Road, Austin, TX 78750.
