Evelyn Grace Chiles, 93, of Mountain City, Texas, was called home to the lord on 10-18-2023. Better known as “Spooky” to family and friends, and Nanny to her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren will now embark on her journey to be reunited with the love of her life Bennie Roy Chiles.
Spooky is preceded in death by her husband Bennie Roy Chiles, parents William Word Cox and Ruby Kye Cox; sisters Ruby Ruth Williams, Hazel Joyce Pressley, and Mildred Litteral; and Brothers James Donald Cox and Ben Thomas Cox.
Spooky is survived by her sisters, Joanne Rhodes (Husband James), and Terry Badeaux; her son Michael Joel Johnson and wife Darlene; grandson Kevin Johnson and wife Kimberly; granddaughter Christie Johnson; great-grandson Charles Johnson and wife Sarah; great-grandson Caleb Johnson and great-granddaughter Lilliana Power; and great-great-grandson Callan Johnson. She also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.
Spooky was born on 10-31-1929 in Cleveland, Texas, as the 3rd of 8 siblings. Spooky had a zest for life like no other. Her love for family and friends was unmatched. She lived her life to the fullest in every way imaginable. She always had a smile on her face and her caring heart was always present. Her friends and family were everything to her. She cherished every visit and every phone call. She was an avid artist/painter and loved to share her artwork with her family. She enjoyed being a big part of her grandchildren's and great-grandchildren’s lives and did all she could to the end to be as involved as she could in their lives. There was never a hungry mouth in her presence, she would feed anyone that came by no matter what, something always on the stove ready to go. She never met a stranger, and that’s why she had so many friends through the years. She loved to bird watch in her younger years, hummingbird season was her favorite, although no bird that flew by her yard went without food. She loved to sit on the porch for hours enjoying them.
Spooky/Nanny will be dearly missed by all who knew her. That smile and laugh can never be replaced. She will live in our hearts forever.
Her grandson Kevin and wife Kim, and great-grandsons Charles and Caleb will forever be in gratitude to Nanny for the past 16 years we all spent together at the Johnson “compound”. That void can never be filled and she will be dearly missed, and we thank Nanny for all she did for us and for letting us be in her life in this way.
The family would like to thank Legend Oak Rehabilitation in Kyle for the care of Spooky over the last few months.
The family would also like to send special thanks, to Kimberly Johnson her granddaughter-in-law for the special care and dedication she gave to Nanny for the past 16 years. She would have not made it this far without you; Nanny knew it, we all know it.
