She was a loving mother of three who valued family and friends above everything else. A former homecoming queen from Booneville, Arkansas—her radiant smile, quirky laugh, and jovial sense of humor could light up any room that was blessed with her presence.
She loved jazz music, dancing and art. She was well-travelled and enjoyed a full social life with a wide circle of friends who adored her. She was married three times—to her first husband, Gary Starling, the father of her children, Jerry Johnston, and her last husband, Sherman Holmes. While she spent a large part of her life as a dedicated, stay-at-home mother, she earned an Associate’s Degree as one of the first graduates from Austin Community College. She went on to become a phlebotomist, a real-estate agent, and manager of a popular boutique.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Garfield “Chick” Hodges Sr. and Jessie Fern Hodges-McConnell, her brother, Garfield Hodges II, and her three former husbands. She is survived by her three children Kristan, Kelly, and Jeffery Johnston, her grandson Liam Hincker, and her sons-in-law Thomas Graspo and Kevin Hincker.
A memorial and reception to honor her will be held at 1:00pm on Saturday, January 28 at Cook-Walden Chapel of the Hills Funeral Home at 9700 Anderson Mill Road, Austin, TX 78750.
