I did not know Ethan for a long period of time, but for the amount of time I had known him, I came to discover what a bright and wonderful person he was. Always the life of a party in a chat room and never failed to express his kindness towards others. I remember the moment I was told of his passing and I almost could no believe it because I thought to myself "such a young wonderful person can't be gone"...He will be missed.



I'm thinking of Ethan today on his birthday and sending Milissa, Peter, and Will lots of love.
Ethan, as an Aries (forgive me live in Taos) had so much self determination. A true Ram, knew what he wanted. Ethan you are missed and honored today.




I just heard about Ethan's, "Veers", passing.  I knew Veers from some of the firearms chat rooms.  I'm truly shocked and saddened by his passing.  He was always fun to chat with about firearms and other nonsense.

It is with great sadness that we learned of Ethan's passing.  We have many fond memories of our days on Southern Ave and how the boys quickly became friends soon after your arrival in Dallas.  Ethan will, forever, be in our thoughts ... wishing you strength and courage through this difficult time

I just heard about this. I can't believe it. 

You were a great friend. I especially appreciated the calming presence you brought as a roommate

I remember the first time we met you were reading a biography of Mao Zedong. I thought "this should be interesting."

There was also the time your arm swelled up and you very casually asked me to take you to the E.R. I figured it was an allergic reaction, but then it turned out to be a staph infection. And yet the entire time, you were unfazed. 

I was glad to see how you bounced back after that and pursued your own course in life. It took guts to head back to school, but as always you were undaunted.

I will miss the witty banter we had.

Most of all, I will treasure the times when you, me, Adam, and Liz would hang out on Fridays after our meeting. Those were always the highlight of my week.

I love you brother, and I look forward to seeing you on the other side one day. I'm a bit jealous that you get to see Jon Hirsch again before I do. Tell that crazy old man that I still miss him.

Ethan's untimely and early death is a tragedy. There are no words that can express my understanding of the pain and great sense of loss your wonderful family is experiencing. I can only give you my heart and add my own sorrow to yours. 

When I first meet Ethan, he was, as only a teenager can be, defiant and sullen with a kind of quiet anger. He was a smart kid and I liked him.

I watched as he went through a lot of bad luck, the jobs drying up, a promise from a friend not kept, all this on top of him having to cope with being diabetic. It just seemed excessive for someone so young.

I watched as he almost died,  left at the end of his driveway from an overdose, and how his parents got  him into the best treatment they could find.  I  listened often on morning walks  with Milissa about his progress and set backs and heard  the total commitment, love and anguish she and Peter were going through.

Last Christmas we all had dinner together and what an amazing difference.  Ethan was no longer a sullen teenager but a young man who was engaging, curious, polite and confidant. I was so impressed and felt so proud of him as if he were my own and told him so.  Then Ethan, with complete sincerity and a sweet graciousness, thanked me. What courage and great commitment he demonstrated getting his life and happiness back and in finding his own unique path.

I like to think of Ethan free in the universe saying as in Frye's poem, "I am the thousand winds that blow. I am the diamond sparkles on the snow."

 

 




I am so sorry to hear of your loss of Ethan. It has been many years since
we were together at Bannockburn and I did not have Ethan but I remember
you and Will fondly. I will certainly be thinking of all of you and send good

Ethan was the Security Officer at my branch with RBFCU.  He was so sweet and we could definitely tell he had some goals that would eventually take him places away from Smith Protective.  He never spoke of his health issues, so I was surprised to hear of them.  

To Mr. & Mrs. Greenberg: I know all too well what it is like to lose a son.  My son, Erik Allen Beach, died on October 27, 2002 from a terminal brain tumor, just before his 12th birthday.  I wish I could take away your pain but please know that, in time, it will get better - and not too many people can say they have personally met their Guardian Angel! Ethan is still with you and always will be.  God has not taken him from you.  He has placed him in His heart, that he may be closer to yours.  

Interesting note: Ethan died on my son's 23rd birthday - I have a feeling Erik may have been there to welcome Ethan home, so please know he is in good company.

We were so very saddened to hear about Ethan's sudden passing. Ethan was a great kid who grew up to be his own man and find his own way. I know that you loved him deeply and were very proud of his growth.

I recall when we were all starting out as parents and would visit you with the kids. I was never sure if being mothers and fathers would be easy for any of us, yet you created a great family. During those brief visits together your unconditional love for your children was clearly in evidence. Ethan's kindness toward others was a reflection of your love for him.

We are sorry that your time with Ethan was so short.

I am so deeply saddened by the loss of your son and my friend. I will always treasure the memories I have of Ethan from middle school, high school, and beyond. The kindness and insight he shared with everyone he met will never be forgotten. He warmed everyone's heart wherever he went. When I moved to Austin earlier last year, he was so friendly and helpful. I will never forget our friendship. His memory will always live on in everyone's hearts, and I know he will forever be in mine.

Milissa and I were expecting our boys at the same time, and were so glad we had kids that could play together during our visits in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Maryland. Dear Milissa, Peter and Will:

We have many wonderful memories of Ethan, starting with Bannockburn Nursery School in Bethesda.

David remembers Ethan from the â€œbeginner backpackingâ€ trips in the Shenandoah that Geoffrey and he joined with Peter and Ethan.  He also remembers Ethan from Lynn Brownellâ€™s 4 yr-old x 5 day-a-week coop nursery school class, when David brought his viola and let the kids try it out-â€“which Ethan did much more successfully than any other child in the class.

Misako remembers Ethan best from those Bethesda days.  He usually seemed to know exactly what he wanted.  She babysat the four boys from time to time, and remembers they played well together.  In those days, we didnâ€™t have any video games at home, so they played lego, army men, make-believe type role plays, lots of physical activity like sliding down the stairs covered with a mattress, and some quieter board games.  Ethan was a leader, and Misako could do her own activities at home when they were playing. It was the same when we visited the Greenbergs for New Yearâ€™s Eve to ring in the new Millenium and â€œY2Kâ€.

After the Greenberg family moved to Dallas, we could still keep up during vacations.  We saw them in Colorado in 2002, when we rented a house in Basalt and hiked together.  When we next saw Ethan in Dallas in 2004 on our way to Tokyo, he was entering 7th grade and already looked like a 16 â€“ 17 year old.  Misako was surprised to see a teenage Ethan, especially because Geoffrey had not had his growth spurt yet and still looked like a child.  Geoffrey had pretty much caught up by the time we next managed to get together with the Greenberg family, in France in 2007.

Dear Peter, Milissa and Will,

Henry and I are both so saddened to hear of Ethan's passing. We have many treasured memories from spending time with Ethan in many different times and places. I remember that from an early age, Ethan had strong convictions--even if that meant wearing his winter coat inside at school, and renewing the same book about dogs from the library every couple weeks for an entire school year. I also have fond memories of spending hours on hiking trips playing games with leaves at the stream together. Later on, we had many great times enjoying nature and board games on our trips to Dallas, Colorado and France. Ethan was always a great friend and someone I looked up to for his intelligence and independent outlook on life. We will miss him dearly.

Hal and I are so sad for your tragic loss...words seem inadequate at this time and how can they possibly help those who love and miss Ethan but, somehow, I believe they do.  I've been reading all the heartfelt (some funny) messages from his friends and from family friends and while we did not know Ethan personally, we know that he was a very special light in this world, and he was loved by so many.  May all these words of comfort help sustain his family and friends today and in the months to come.  We have been fortunate to have Milissa and Peter as neighbors and friends in Taos these past two years. He came to our house last Christmas Eve and delighted everyone who met him. We spoke long after about how impressive Ethan and his brother Will were--what fine young men. Along with my parents, I was so upset to hear of Ethan's passing. I was hoping to see Will at the airport in Portland as we left on the same day last week. Max and I would have given you a huge hug, Will, and you should know that there is someone at Reed who knew your brother and of the magnitude of this loss. When I think back to elementary school, I recall that Ethan was always very kind and sensitive. He must be glowing Somewhere and smiling within you all.
