Raymond Fowler, 86, completed his Marathon April 22, 2010 and was released from complications of pulmonary fibrosis. Raymond was born May 16, 1923 in the Panhandle of Texas and spent his working life in Amarillo before retiring to the Austin area in 1985. He graduated from Lubbock High School and Texas Tech University with high honors and was winner of the CN Hilton award which went to the student with the highest scholastic rating. During World War II Raymond was a B-17 Pilot with the 390th Bombardment group based in Framingham England. He flew many missions dropping food over war torn areas in Europe. Raymond was married to Una Mae Fowler, a gifted and prolific artist and creator, for 50 years until her death in 1993. Together, they caught an exorbitant amount of trout, primarily in the rivers and lakes of Colorado. They enjoyed entertaining many customers on the Islands of Hawaii where Una taught them the Art of the Hula dance. Raymond also enjoyed bird hunting, golf, great music, his Grandsons York and Darin… and long distance running. He won Marathons in 1976 and 1978 and was the Amarillo YMCA runner of the year for several years. Amarillo Hardware Company distributed major appliances and electronics to over 2500 retail dealers in Texas, Oklahoma, Colorado and New Mexico. Raymond worked 38 years there, serving as Manager of the Appliance Department, Vice President, and on the Board of Directors. Raymond sold state-of-art technology in television and stereo systems, primarily Zenith, and the Fowler home was often a beta site for the latest technologies. Mr. Fowler was considered a marketing expert and won many national sales awards. But most of all…he did it his way. Raymond is survived by his son, Lowell, and his wife, Sue; grandsons, York and Darin Fowler; and sister-in-law, Fleeta Lynch. The Family extends thanks to the staff of The Summit on Mesa Drive and to Buckner Hospice. Thanks to Dr. Winfred Moore, Raymond's long time pastor at First Baptist Church of Amarillo, for the calls and Rev. Mark Gardner for the prayers. A private family graveside service will be held Monday, April 26th at Austin Memorial Park Cemetery. A reception for family and friends will be held at 11:00 a.m. at Lowell and Sue's home at 5607 Palisade Ct.
