Elias married Dionicia Lopez on March 26, 1946 in Austin, Texas. He served in the US Army Air Corp during the Korean Conflict and came home to work for the US Postal Service for over 20 years until his retirement.
He has been a long time member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church.
He was preceded in death by a son, Carlos Mendez; two grandsons, Michael Hernandez and Robert Ybarra, Jr.; a sister, Alice Saldana.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Dionicia Mendez; two sons, Sergio S. Mendez and Delores (wife), and Elias A. Mendez Jr.; six daughters, Margaret Lara, Mary Ybarra and Robert, Sr. (husband), Rosie Hernandez and Raymond, Sr. (husband), Irene Lozano and Adolfo, Sr. (husband), Lydia Ybarra and Jesse, Sr. (husband), and Christine Mancias, all of Austin, Texas; two sisters, Mary Soliz of Lockhart and Lupe Pinedo of San Antonio; 28 grandchildren and 49 great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren and numerous other family members and friends.
Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family from five o’clock until seven o’clock in the evening, on Thursday, the 19th of July 2012, at Cook-Walden Funeral Home, 6100 North Lamar Boulevard, Austin, Texas. A Rosary will be recited at seven o’clock that evening.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at twelve o’clock Noon on Friday, the 20th of July, at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, 1206 E. 9th Street, Austin, Texas. Interment will follow in Cook-Walden Capital Park Cemetery under the direction of Cook-Walden Funeral Home.
