Edwin Morton Knight III

Edwin Morton Knight, III, of Dripping Springs, Texas passed away peacefully on the morning of Saturday, April 5, 2014, he was 81. Born September 28, 1932, in Washington, DC, to Morton and Maren Knight, Ed grew up in Arlington, Virginia (with younger siblings, Robert and Susan) and joined the Air Force after high school. After serving in the Korean War he was stationed in San Antonio, Texas where he met and married the love of his life, Luellen Rhodes, from Schertz in June 1956.

Ed had been to nearly every country while in the Air Force, but claimed San Antonio as home, having been stationed there numerous times before retiring in 1976 and moving to Austin. Ed then had a second career working for the State of Texas in the Department of Labor and Standards (most notably as a boxing inspector seen on TV, getting to meet Mohammed Ali and George Foreman), before re-retiring in 1995.

As his family always heard, Ed was one of the most pleasant and respectful gentlemen you’d ever meet. He led a very active and social life, and proudly served for nearly 30 yrs in the Oak Hill Volunteer Fire Dept, as Fire Chief for over 10 years and as their training officer. He also was a member in both North Hays and Dripping Springs Volunteer Fire Depts as well. Ed was an active member of the American Legion and the Dripping Springs VFW, serving as an Honor Guard for many years.

Ed is survived by his loving wife, Lou; and their daughters, Annette Moltz of Spring, Texas; and Lori Russell of Gravette, Arkansas. Ed was blessed with five grandchildren, Danielle, Lindsey, Darren, Casey and Lana; and great-granddaughter, Abigail.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., Thursday, April 10, 2014 at Cook-Walden/Forest Oaks Funeral Home.

Funeral Service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, April 11, 2014 at Oak Hill United Methodist Church located at 7815 Hwy. 290 West in Austin. He will be laid to rest at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio..
