Edna A. (Powell) Howard was born in Liberty, Kansas on December 7, 1911 and passed away on Wednesday, December 8, 2010 in Austin, Texas. She attended high school and business college in Coffeyville, Kansas. On December 25, 1937, Edna married her true love, Amos A. Howard, and they lived 65 wonderful years together. Over the next 32 years Amos’ work took them to Kansas City, Missouri, then to Vienna, Austria; Novisad, Yugoslavia and Oran, North Africa before retiring in Austin, Texas in the late 1970’s.
Edna is the last of her generation but leaves many family members, nephews and nieces. She was predeceased by her father, Oliver H. Powell; mother, Sarah (Krapp) Powell; husband, Amos; four sisters, Ruth, Ethel, Velma, Alta; and three brothers, Bill, Jack, and Oliver.
Edna enjoyed being a homemaker, but her life was centered on assisting Amos and her religion. She was a “people person” and worked to help many who derived strength from her recommendations, faith in them, and guidance concerning dealing with situations encountered in everyday life. Edna and Amos contributed much and assisted many to make the world a better place in which to live. Of all they knew, Dr. Herb Cooper was the light of their life, a cherished friend and like a son. Dr. Cooper and his wife, Karen made annual trips to Austin each year to visit.
Edna and Amos were very dedicated members of the Hope Presbyterian Church family and developed many lifelong friendships. She read her Bibles daily and taught Sunday School at all of the churches she attended. Throughout Edna’s life in Austin, Ellen Maniero was her very special friend and Deacon at Hope Presbyterian Church and we thank her for her love and devotion to Edna. Edna was active in the Tuesday Circle at Hope Presbyterian and taught some of their Bible lessons. When Edna lost Amos in 2002, she moved to the Clairmont Retirement on Los Indios Street. Being there over eight years she was active in “Red Hat” and made many friends who we thank for their many kindnesses. The family also thanks Edna’s nephew, Bill Powell and wife Carol Powell, for their loving care for Edna over the years.
Honorary pallbearers are Bain Powell, Bradley Powell, Kailynn Powell, Wil Powell, Glen Bushong, Gary Howard, Ellen Mainiero, Matthew Mainiero, Lorrie Henderson and Robert Archanbault.
