Earcle Edward "Red" Chappell born August 4, 1924 in Wynnewood, OK died peacefully in his sleep on December 22, 2010 after an extended illness. He left early in the morning like he always wanted to do on all his trips.
Preceding him in death were his parents, Clarence Lewis Chappell, and Mary (Mayme) B. L. Brewster; and sister Wanda Mae Ferris.
Red Chappell was a lifelong resident of Austin, Texas until moving to Bertram in 2000. He graduated from Austin High School in 1941. Known as Babe to his sailor buddies, because at 17 he was the youngest sailor on the ship. He served in WWII on the USS Perkins and saw action in Guadal Canal and Talagi Bay. He married his high school sweetheart, Faye Mcgee, in 1944. He eventually settled into a career with the Southern Pacific Railroad where he worked for over 32 years. He and Faye were charter members of Tarrytown Baptist Church.
He is survived by Faye Chappell, his wife of 66 years; daughter, Ersalene "Crickett" Chappell; and sons, Earcle "Spunky" Chappell and wife, Eva, Michael Chappell and wife Julie, and Mitchell Chappell; brother, Ralph "Pete" Chappell and wife, Tracy of Oklahoma; grandchildren, Chris Chappell, Kelly Chappell, Jennifer Dierksheide, Dori Chappell, Rebecca Elias, Micah Chappell and Lewis Chappell; and many great-grandchildren. Whether he was known as Earcle, Red, Sug, Dad, or Pa, he will be greatly missed.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, December 24, 2010 at the First Baptist Church, 325 South Gabriel in Bertram, Texas; visitation will be held at 10:00 a.m., prior to the service. Graveside service will follow at 2:00 p.m. at Cook-Walden/Forest Oaks Memorial Park in Austin, Texas.
