Dorothy was an excellent student earning recognition as the salutatorian in her Round Rock High graduation class in 1940. Her success in studies was overshadowed by meeting “my Charles” in first grade. “My Charles” turned out to be Charles Munson. Dorothy and Charles were married on a sweltering evening August 29, 1947. They celebrated their 70th anniversary last August!
Dorothy and Charles were the proud parents of a daughter, Cathy Sue, and a son, Charles Jr. (Chuck). Later they were proud grandparents of Charles III (Charlie) and great grandparents of Gus, Owen and Abigail Lenore Munson. Dorothy was not only proud of her descendants, but her Walsh family in the Round Rock and Austin area including her brother, Edward Jr., and his wife, Juanita, and sons Edward III and Chris and their extended families.
Dorothy was a skilled educator, teaching in Austin at Pease, Brentwood, Gullett, and Lucy Read Elementary Schools and Lamar Junior High School. Ms. Walsh/Mrs. Munson positively impacted the lives of hundreds of students. She was President of the local chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, a society of professional educators. Dorothy was a member of various organizations including Pi Lambda Theta (an honorary education fraternity), several retired teacher groups, St. John’s Methodist Church, Texas Exes, and the Austin Country Club. Lest one forget, she was an honor graduate of the University of Texas in Education, a member of Alpha Delta Pi, and a very loyal Longhorn.
This brings us to another passion in her life, Longhorn sports. “My Charles” was a baseball player on Texas’ first National Championship team in 1949 and later became a coach and Athletic Director for AISD and worked many years in administrative capacities for the UT Athletic Department. Dorothy not only attended hundreds of games, including the pinnacle of the College World Series in Omaha, but she really knew what was happening on the field (she sat in the stands next to Bibb Falk for many years).
Dorothy’s special talents above all others, however, were nurturing family relationships and an unfailing generosity towards friends and family. “Dot” as she was first called by her grandson, Charlie, always put others ahead, whether family members, students or people on the street. She left you with a smile on your face. She and Charles recently provided funds for a room named in their honor at the new Dell Seton Medical Center.
Dot was preceded in death by her parents and brother. She is survived by husband, Charles; daughter, Cathy Sue; son, Chuck, and his wife, Phyllis; grandson, Charlie, and his wife, Malissa; and great grandchildren Gus, Owen and Abigail.
Dot would want to express thanks to the Brookdale Northwest Hills staff and residents and appreciation to Gerald, Scott, Michelle and Gregg for their friendship. Dot offers a special thanks to Dyan Castell as caregiver and dear friend for both her and Charles the last eighteen months and excellent medical assistance from Dr. Brent Egeland, Dr. David Morris and his assistant, Bobby Richards, and finally Hospice Austin. Peace be with you; bye Dot!
There will be a visitation at 10:00 a.m. and funeral service at 11:00 on April 18, 2018, at St. John’s Methodist Church on Allandale Road with a reception afterwards. Following the reception at the church, there will be a private burial.
